Unique experience in the heart of heritage
At the World Cultural Heritage site of the Ho Dynasty Citadel in Thanh Hoa, a unique tourist experience is attracting visitors: sitting on rustic buffalo carts, slowly cruising around the ancient stone walls and green rice fields. This is not just a trip, but a journey back to the peaceful countryside.
This special journey lasts about 30-45 minutes, taking visitors through village roads, weaving between rice fields and following the sturdy citadel wall. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Director of the Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage Conservation Center, although there are many options such as bicycles or electric cars, the buffalo cart experience organized by local households is still the most popular.

Journey back to memory
Many tourists, especially those who are far from home, find familiar childhood memories here. Mr. Nguyen Huu Duong, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: “Sitting on the buffalo cart, I feel like I am back in the countryside with the creaking sound of the wheels, the steady footsteps of the buffalo, the sound of the wind blowing through the bamboo rows... All create a special experience that is hard to find in other tourist destinations.”

The highlight of the trip is when the car stops at the most beautiful views, allowing visitors to admire the entire city gate and take souvenir photos. The lush green rice fields located inside the city wall create a majestic and peaceful countryside picture.
Sustainable community tourism model
The buffalo cart service not only brings an attractive tourism product but also an effective community tourism model. This activity helps local people have more income, at the same time promoting the image of heritage in a close and authentic way.

Mr. Long said that this combination has encouraged tourists to stay longer to explore rural life and enjoy local specialties such as rice cakes, Lam tea, or bamboo tube rice. This is a sustainable direction, both preserving heritage and developing the economy for the community around the Ho Dynasty Citadel.
