Pre-match review

Carlo Ancelotti’s new era with Brazil has not gone as expected. After an unconvincing goalless draw against Ecuador, the Selecao have won just one of their last five matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers (three draws, one loss).

This result has left Brazil in 4th place in the standings with 22 points after 15 matches – an achievement that is not worthy of the position of the team that has won the world championship 5 times. Although this position is still enough to qualify directly for North America next summer, they are only 4 points ahead of the 7th place team (play-off position) with 3 matches left in the qualifying round. This is not too big a gap, and if Brazil continues to stumble, the risk of being pushed down to 7th place is entirely possible.

The home match against Paraguay is an opportunity for Ancelotti's team to find a win and improve their position, as they are currently only 2 points behind second-placed Ecuador and third-placed Paraguay.

However, this task will not be easy as Paraguay are in very impressive form, unbeaten in 9 consecutive matches since Copa America 2024, including a recent 2-0 win over Uruguay. However, poor away record (winning only 1/20 recent matches) could be Paraguay's "Achilles heel" in this confrontation.
