Dedicated to helping children with disabilities integrate into the community

“Every day in class, teachers have to devote all their energy and strength, even double or triple their efforts compared to normal, to teach disabled children communication, basic life skills, letter and number recognition, and even the simplest rules of conduct, while also kindling faith and hope for special children, and soothing the hearts of parents when they see their children progressing day by day.” The confidences of teacher Pham Quang Huy, Director of the Provincial Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education, make everyone who comes here feel moved and sympathetic.

Witnessing the teachers and “nannies” patiently and devotedly caring for and training each child in eating habits, pronunciation, speaking, communication, etc., we further appreciate the hard work of the teaching staff in these special classes. The center is one of four specialized educational facilities in the province that implements special education programs according to various levels of disability (physical, intellectual, visually impaired, hearing impaired, etc.); at the same time, it supports early intervention for students with disabilities, combining specialized and integrated education for children with disabilities.

Currently, most specialized educational institutions focus on supporting basic knowledge, self-development skills, and specific skills for children aged 3-15 with common intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, language disorders, hyperactivity, autism, etc. Ms. NTN, To Hieu ward, shared: I have an 8-year-old child with delayed speech and poor motor skills. I have had intervention in many places without success. Last year, my family sent my child for intervention at the Provincial Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education. After 2 weeks, we saw that my child spoke more, communicated, and moved better. We were very happy. After 1 year of intervention, my child is now going to class like any other normal friend.

Many years ago, most children with intellectual and motor disabilities were detected and intervened late, missing the golden treatment period, so the effectiveness of inclusive education was not high. With the emergence of specialized educational facilities, many children with disabilities have had access to a suitable educational environment and early support to improve their life skills.

Sharing about the process of inclusive education for children with disabilities, teacher Nguyen Xuan Hau, teacher at the Provincial Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education, said: Educating children with disabilities not only requires dedicated teachers but also a suitable environment and space, helping children to be educated in all basic and necessary skills. In addition, there needs to be daily coordination and companionship from the family and sympathy and sharing from the community.

According to statistics, there are currently over 2,800 disabled children in the province, of which 1,466 children aged 6-12 are receiving integrated education. In recent years, the education of disabled children has received attention from all levels and sectors, with many solutions and support policies being implemented; integrated educational facilities in the province have also received investment in facilities and teaching equipment from organizations, businesses, and philanthropists. Communication and training for staff, teachers, and parents are also regularly organized, creating a positive integration environment for disabled children... The rate of disabled children going to school at the right age has increased over the years; in preschool alone, the integration rate has reached 96.7%.

In order for children with disabilities to have more effective learning and integration conditions, it is necessary to have synchronous attention from all levels, sectors and local authorities. In particular, it is necessary to have preferential policies to attract teachers specializing in special education; continue to invest in facilities and equipment, create suitable spaces for inclusive education; promote communication, raise community awareness of inclusive education, early detection to help children with disabilities receive timely intervention...
