Previously, on May 29, 2025, the Government Electronic Information Portal reported on press reports on the issue of counterfeit drugs. According to the report, the current state of pharmaceutical management in Vietnam, despite having certain legal frameworks, still has many loopholes, creating conditions for counterfeit drugs to infiltrate the distribution system, especially in the online environment. Of concern is the increasing sophistication of counterfeit drug producers.
In addition, a significant number of retail pharmacies have not strictly complied with regulations, selling drugs without invoices or of unknown origin, unintentionally or intentionally creating conditions for counterfeit drugs to infiltrate the official distribution system.
Currently, Vietnam's drug testing system has 3 central institutes and 62 provincial centers, but there are still many limitations in modern equipment for rapid on-site testing. At the same time, testing capacity among units is not synchronized.
Another difficult problem is that the regulations on administrative sanctions for the production and trade of counterfeit drugs are too lenient and not enough of a deterrent. Meanwhile, the negative impacts of counterfeit drugs do not stop at causing economic damage but also entail extremely serious consequences for patients' health.
Regarding the above reflection, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long requested the Ministry of Health to continue to resolutely implement the solutions directed by the Prime Minister; strengthen solutions to control and handle counterfeit drugs.
