Creating a new position for Vietnamese cinema in the creative industry

The 24th Vietnam Film Festival was held in Ho Chi Minh City shortly after the locality joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The event opened up opportunities for the strong development of the film industry in the direction of professionalism, modernity and international integration.

The 24th Vietnam Film Festival takes place from November 21 to 25 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Taking place from November 21 to 25 with the theme “Vietnamese Cinema - Sustainable Development and International Integration in the New Era”, the Festival is expected to bring together more than 200 films and about 1,000 domestic and foreign delegates. This is an opportunity to honor unique artistic values ​​while promoting cooperation, investment and creativity in the field of cinema.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong said that this year's festival has many new features: Awarding certificates of merit from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to groups and individuals who have made positive contributions to Vietnamese cinema; for the first time, representatives of 34 departments of culture and sports; departments of culture, sports and tourism, and cinema centers nationwide will attend, exchange experiences, expand cooperation, and connect domestic and foreign film crews. In addition, the exchange program between students of film schools, film lovers with international directors, actors, and experts will create opportunities for the young generation to learn and nurture their passion for the seventh art.

Regarding the award system, in addition to traditional categories, the 24th Vietnam Film Festival will award a certificate of merit from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to the "Unit distributing the most Vietnamese films in the period 2023-2025" and at the same time honor Vietnamese and foreign individuals who have made special contributions to the development and promotion of Vietnamese cinema.

Many experts believe that in 2024-2025, Vietnamese films will be warmly welcomed by audiences. The number of high-grossing films will increase rapidly. This number demonstrates the maturity of the creative team, the attractiveness of the domestic film market and reflects the development of the film industry.

Currently, Vietnam has many favorable conditions in terms of facilities, techniques, studios, contexts and resources, creating a foundation for sustainable development. Therefore, the 24th Film Festival will introduce to the public new works of Vietnamese cinema while opening up a space for dialogue and exchange between artists, filmmakers and audiences. The event is also an opportunity to learn about the needs and tastes of the public; improve professionalism in cinema activities, create conditions for artists, managers, film creators, producers, distributors and distributors to exchange experiences, and promote the development of the film industry.

"The success of many hundred-billion-dollar films shows the development of Vietnamese cinema. We are beginning to have enough foundation to develop an advanced Vietnamese film industry, catching up with the region and the world," said Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong.

Vice Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy emphasized that the film festival is an opportunity to promote the infrastructure conditions as well as the new face of the city after the merger. The city will coordinate with the Vietnam Film Institute to organize exhibitions and film screenings for the people, workers and students, contributing to bringing cinema closer to the public.

The highlight of this year's festival is a series of sideline activities and a program to promote the development of local cinema. These activities create opportunities for filmmakers, artists, businesses and local leaders to meet and cooperate, contributing to the formation of a network of connections and promoting the spread of Vietnamese cinema. The photo exhibition "Ho Chi Minh City grows with the country through the perspective of cinema" introduces to the public the image of a creative city, thereby promoting the country and people of Vietnam in the process of international integration.

People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, said: Ho Chi Minh City is the first locality in Vietnam to be recognized by UNESCO as a creative city in the field of cinema. Hosting this film festival is an opportunity to honor the art of cinema and strengthen international connections. The city will organize many activities in response such as music programs, tourism, cultural exchanges to introduce the image of a youthful, friendly and creative Ho Chi Minh City.

November 21: Opening ceremony at Independence Palace, Ho Chi Minh City.

November 22: Seminar on “Developing the film industry in the new era”; meeting and exchanging experiences between localities.

November 23: Workshop on “Current situation and solutions to attract film crews to localities”; Exchange of film artists with businessmen and workers in industrial zones; Meeting with local delegations chaired by leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Art program “Music and fashion show in movies”.

November 24: Exchange with the film crew of “Cricket: Adventure to the Swamp” with students of Van Lang University.

November 25: Workshop “Promoting the value of archival moving image documents in the current situation”; Closing ceremony and award ceremony.
