In Vietnam, every year, out of 1.5 million children born, 2-3% have genetic diseases and congenital malformations such as: Down syndrome (mental retardation), Edwards syndrome (caused by extra chromosomes), Thalassemia (congenital hemolytic anemia)... Prenatal and neonatal screening, diagnosis, and treatment will help detect, intervene, and treat early diseases, disabilities, metabolic disorders, and genetic disorders right in the fetal and neonatal stages. At that time, children are born to develop normally or avoid serious physical and intellectual consequences, reduce the number of disabled and mentally retarded people in the community, and contribute to improving population quality.

During the 2021-2025 period, Ca Mau has deployed prenatal and newborn screening activities to 100% of communes, wards and towns through a network of hospitals, regional health centers and grassroots health stations.

In his opening speech, Pharmacist CKII. Tran Le Chieu Bich - Head of the Population Department emphasized that population collaborators play an important role as an "extended arm" of the Population sector, helping to bring population policies and laws closer to the people. The results of the collaborators' activities will determine the success of population work in the locality.

On the first day of the training course, the reporters presented documents related to the program to expand screening, diagnosis, and treatment of some prenatal and neonatal diseases and disabilities, and provided guidance on data collection and statistical reporting at the grassroots health level. In addition, collaborators were updated with technical expertise in prenatal and neonatal screening, diagnosis, treatment, and communication and counseling skills. From sharing practical experiences in program implementation, the training course created opportunities for trainees to discuss and propose solutions to help increase implementation effectiveness.

The training course was organized in 2 sessions (November 12 - November 18 and November 19 - November 28) in 2 areas of Ca Mau and Bac Lieu for staff of organizations, social unions at the grassroots level, population collaborators and medical staff in hamlets and villages in the area.
