In the first training session, Dr. Do Van Hung and Dr. Pham Huu Thuong shared an overview of the current situation of sloping land, soil erosion and degradation, and the role of agroforestry in soil conservation and increasing farmers' livelihoods. Trainees were introduced to the concept, benefits, and typical models being applied in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

Dr. Do Trong Hoan analyzed the carbon storage potential and ecological multi-function of this system, affirming that agroforestry is an effective solution for economic and environmental protection goals. Students are guided to choose tree species suitable for the sloping land model.

In addition to theoretical learning, students participated in group discussions on soil conservation effectiveness, economic development and feasibility for local implementation. Experts highly appreciated the creativity and learning spirit of students, especially in combining native plants with perennials to improve the sloping land ecosystem.
In particular, students were able to visit typical agro-forestry models in Nam Lan - Coc Cai village (former Nam Mon commune) to evaluate the effectiveness of soil conservation, erosion control and fertility retention according to the guidance of experts.

According to the representative of the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development, the results of the training course are the basis for building demonstration models of agroforestry, contributing to promoting the development of ecological agriculture , adapting to climate change in the midland and mountainous provinces of the North. The CIFOR-ICRAF organization affirmed to continue providing technical support, researching and replicating effective agroforestry models, capable of conserving land, increasing farmers' income and contributing to reducing carbon emissions.
At the end of the course, students were equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to implement agroforestry models in their localities. This is an important step in protecting land resources, increasing income and adapting to climate change for highland farmers.
