Tet month: CPI increased by nearly 1% due to high shopping demand

Tạp chí Doanh NghiệpTạp chí Doanh Nghiệp06/02/2025

DNVN - During Tet, people's travel and shopping needs increased, causing the consumer price index (CPI) to increase by nearly 1% compared to the previous month. Supply and demand, and prices of goods were stable during Tet, with no sudden price increases.

According to the data just officially announced by the General Statistics Office, the CPI in January 2025 increased by 0.98% compared to the previous month. This is a fairly high increase compared to the monthly increase of the CPI index, but it is a general trend during the Tet months.

The adjustment of medical service prices in some localities, as well as the increase in transportation and food prices due to increased travel and shopping needs during the Lunar New Year, are the main reasons for the CPI increase of approximately 1% in January.

However, during the Tet holiday, supply and demand and prices of goods were stable, there were no sudden price increases or exploitation of artificial scarcity of goods for illegal profits. There were 9 groups of goods and services with price indexes increasing, 2 groups of goods with price indexes decreasing.

CPI in Tet month increased by 0.98%, supply and demand of goods are stable.

Of which, the group of medicines and medical services increased the most, with an increase of up to 9.43% compared to the previous month, causing the general CPI to increase by 0.51 percentage points. The transportation group increased by 0.95%, partly due to the high demand for travel during Tet.

The food and catering services group increased by 0.74%; the beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.69%; the other goods and services group increased by 0.51%; and the garment, hat, and footwear group increased by 0.38%.

The remaining groups of goods with increased price indexes include housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials (up 0.35%); household equipment and appliances (up 0.31%); and culture, entertainment and tourism (up 0.27%).

On the contrary, there were two groups of goods and services with a decrease in price index, including the education group (down slightly by 0.04%) and the post and telecommunications group (down 0.12%).

Forecasting the coming time, the General Statistics Office said that although global inflationary pressure is expected to slow down, it still has many potential risks. In that context, domestic macroeconomic stability also has potential risks.

Specifically, the pressure on management of exchange rates, interest rates, and inflation is still high, especially in the face of adverse external impacts. Therefore, it is necessary to closely monitor to have proactive, flexible, timely, and effective management solutions.
