With an area of tens of hectares of kumquat trees in communes such as Hop Tien, Hop Ly, Trieu Thanh, Van Son... (old Trieu Son district), this place is considered the "kumquat capital of Thanh land".
However, this year, the Central region in general and Thanh Hoa in particular have suffered many storms and floods, leading to hundreds of thousands of hectares of agricultural land being inundated. This has also greatly affected the area of kumquat trees in Hop Tien, the place with the largest kumquat plantation in Thanh Hoa.
However, thanks to the proactive application of science and technology, most of the kumquat growing area is not much affected, quality and productivity remain stable.
Farmers are busy growing kumquat trees to serve the traditional Tet holiday.
According to a leader of Hop Tien commune, currently, to serve the Tet market, people have been busy bending and adjusting the kumquat trees to have the right shape, with buds, green leaves, yellow fruit, and high aesthetic value. Many kumquat gardens in Hop Tien commune have been ordered in advance by traders from all over. Some gardeners grow several hundred to thousands of trees, and after selling, they can earn up to hundreds of millions of dong per crop.
The production of kumquat trees not only brings income to garden owners but also creates seasonal job opportunities for many workers, such as loading and transporting kumquats at the end of the year. Some workers can easily earn about 500,000 VND per day during the peak season.
Currently, fertilization, pruning and shaping are the most important things, deciding whether this season will be successful or not.
To make the kumquat tree grow well and have a beautiful shape, farmers must prune and shape each branch, cover the base, and count the new shoots at the right time to adjust the amount of fruit. This work requires meticulousness and experience from the grower.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan (60 years old, village 3, Hop Tien commune) said that this year his family planted about 300 kumquat trees. At this time, traders have come to place orders, so the family is working almost non-stop.
With harsh weather and rising prices, farmers have to invest more money to ensure that kumquat trees stay healthy, with the leaves and fruits at their best just in time for Tet.
With kumquat trees, pruning and shaping them into beautiful shapes requires meticulousness and experience from the grower. Each kumquat tree will show the skill of the gardener.
The price of each kumquat tree ranges from 600 thousand to several million dong, depending on the quality.
If all goes well, the garden owner will earn several hundred million after each crop.
