Breakthrough in urban infrastructure
Although Bac Kan province has a history of 125 years, the provincial capital has only officially become a city in the past 10 years. From a young urban area with many limitations in infrastructure, the city has invested heavily in upgrading roads, expanding urban space and modernizing public works.
Currently, more than 80% of rural roads in the area have been paved, helping people travel conveniently all year round. In the central area, the public LED lighting system has been invested synchronously, creating a modern appearance for the city and contributing to energy saving. Urban beautification work has also been focused on, with many streets being upgraded, sidewalks being planned synchronously and campuses and entertainment areas being invested in and built.
In addition, Bac Kan city is implementing a series of important traffic projects such as: Bac Kan city road to Ba Be lake, Cho Moi - Bac Kan road, connecting road to Phieng My, road to Nam Cat lake... These routes not only help improve inter-regional connectivity but also facilitate economic and tourism development.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, a retired official in Duc Xuan ward, shared: “I see the city changing every day, the roads are wider, the public places are cleaner. The evening lighting system is very effective, creating a sense of safety when traveling”. Ms. Nong Thi He, a trader in Song Cau ward, also commented: “After more than ten years, my relatives returned to Bac Kan and were very surprised by the city's changes”.
Service Economic Development - New Growth Driver
In addition to urban infrastructure, Bac Kan city also focuses on developing tourism and trade. The city has opened a Smart Operations Center, applying digital technology in urban management and traffic and security monitoring. The model of "Civilized, cashless streets" has also been deployed, creating a foundation for digital transformation in trade and services.
In the tourism sector, two key eco-tourism areas, Nam Cat Lake and Thac Bac - Ang Toong Pass, are being planned for development. This is an important step to help the city exploit the potential of eco-tourism associated with a sustainable “green economy” model.
Comrade Hoang Ha Bac, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the Bac Kan City People's Committee, said: "We are focusing on calling for investment in the tourism and trade sectors, considering them the main driving force for economic development. The city also continues to improve the investment environment, support businesses and promote digital transformation."
The city also attracted investment in the Huyen Tung Industrial Cluster, including the export shoe, sandal, and sole manufacturing factory project of Chung Jye Bac Kan-Vietnam Shoe Manufacturing Company. With a total investment of about 25 million USD, this project is expected to attract thousands of local workers, contributing to increasing the value of industrial production.
Another highlight is the Song Cau walking street, held every Friday and Saturday. Not only does it attract tourists and create a space for entertainment and culture for the people, the walking street is also an opportunity for small traders and businesses to promote their products and boost their business.
Challenges and expectations for the future

Despite many remarkable achievements, Bac Kan city still faces many challenges, such as limited investment capital, limited clean land for projects and difficulties in land planning management mechanisms and policies.
In the coming period, Bac Kan city aims to complete the Construction Planning Project until 2045, mobilize investment resources and reform administration to create a favorable environment for businesses. The city also commits to focus on developing the service economy, especially eco-tourism and e-commerce, to diversify the economic sector. In addition, it will continue to implement urban renovation projects, expand the "green - clean - civilized" space, aiming to become a type II urban area by 2030 and a sustainable, modern, livable urban area./.
