Green grasslands of Bai Bui

VnExpressVnExpress26/05/2023

Coming to Bai Bui, visitors will sit under the shade of ancient trees, watching herds of buffalo and cows grazing on the grassland.

Bai Bui is located in Khop hamlet, Ngoc Lau commune, Lac Son district, Hoa Binh province, about 140 km from Hanoi. This area has an area of about 9 hectares covered with green grass, located at an altitude of 600 m above sea level.

Nguyen Duc Sam, a local who is currently working in tourism at Bai Bui, said that this was originally a place for local people to graze cattle. In 2022, the road was renovated and Bai Bui began to attract many visitors, especially during the recent April 30 holiday.

On May 13, Vu Minh Quang (Hanoi) and his friends went to Bai Bui to camp overnight after a friend in the group searched the internet and suggested it.

Arriving at the beach around 10pm, it was already dark so Quang could not see the scenery clearly. The whole group gathered to set up camp, eat and rest. The next morning, when he woke up, he and his friends were amazed by the scene before their eyes.

At dawn, before his eyes was a wide, flat, green lawn like a steppe. On the lawn, herds of buffalo and cows of the local people leisurely grazed or wallowed in the mud to cool off. Surrounding them were vegetable and corn gardens of the people. "The simple and wild scenery resembles Hang Tau - the primitive village of Moc Chau by seven or eight parts," said Mr. Quang.

The summer is hot and the temperature is quite high, but thanks to the large, airy space, it does not feel as stuffy as in the city. Just standing under the shade of the old trees, the gentle breeze makes you feel cool and comfortable.

The ancient trees on the beach are called tlau, or Chau trees, Mr. Sam said. More than 60 tlau trees here are hundreds of years old, and were preserved by the People's Council of Ngoc Lau commune in 2007. Currently, Bai Bui, Ngoc Lau commune is one of the few areas with a large number of ancient tlau trees, becoming the pride of the local people.

The Tlau tree is a familiar plant in the life of the Muong ethnic group. The young leaves of the tree are used to eat with some foods such as salted meat and sour meat.

In summer, the maple trees cast a cool shade. In winter, the leaves turn yellow and red, while other trees have shed their leaves. "The maple forest stands out in the middle of the steppe, the scene is like autumn in Europe," said Mr. Sam.

Therefore, the best time to camp at Bai Bui is in winter, from October to December. But in summer, Bai Bui also has its own beauty with the cool green color of nature.

Under the canopy of the trees, the locals have made some swings from bamboo or wood for tourists to enjoy. Camping, swinging, and taking photos at the beach are all popular activities.   free of charge.

As a developing location, Bai Bui is still quite wild, without many tourist services. Next to the beach, there is a homestay for overnight stays and a few beverage stalls. Homestay room rates range from 300,000 - 500,000 VND. The price to rent a tent for 4 - 5 people is about 500,000 VND.

The water counter is quite expensive compared to the market, a bottle of mineral water costs 30,000 VND. Mr. Quang advises tourists to prepare food, drinks, and camping equipment in advance to be proactive and save money.

The space at Bai Bui is quiet and deserted day and night because there are not many tourists. Bai Bui is Quang's favorite camping spot because "the scene is similar to the literary works describing the Vietnamese countryside in the past". According to him, this is also an ideal place to avoid the heat in the summer or to change the atmosphere.

The beach is located in Ngoc Son - Ngo Luong Nature Reserve, so visitors need to pay special attention to landscape preservation. Mr. Sam said that if visitors want to make a campfire, they need to use stoves that are 1 meter or higher in height to avoid burning the grass. Do not climb or impact the ancient trees that have been numbered by forest rangers.

Tourists should bring insect repellent sprays. To ensure the safety of their vehicles when camping overnight, visitors can park their vehicles at tourist facilities located next to the beach, for a fee of 5,000 VND.
