Even optimists did not expect a victory for U22 Vietnam at the CFA Team China - Panda Cup 2025, right in the opening match against host U22 China. But coach Dinh Hong Vinh and his team did it. And completely deserved it.
Above all, it was a result of courage, as the young Golden Star Warriors played with great confidence and without any fear against a highly rated opponent, yet had to compete under the pressure of tens of thousands of roaring spectators at Shuangliu Sports Centre.
The ultimate display of daring and courage was the situation of receiving the ball surrounded by Chinese U22 players, then deciding to rush forward, defeating a red shirt defender and escaping to the bottom wing before passing to Van Thuan. There, two home players took turns missing the ball, bringing a golden opportunity for Minh Phuc, who quietly sneaked into the right flank of the opponent's defense and shot past goalkeeper Huo Shenping in the 81st minute.

Looking back at the match, the 90 minutes at Shuangliu Sports Centre was like a chess game between coach Dinh Hong Vinh and coach Antonio Puche. Every time one team had the ball, the other team immediately retreated and deployed a solid defense system, challenging all attempts to penetrate.
While U22 Vietnam often reveals gaps on both sides of the central defenders, allowing the red-shirted striker to approach and threaten Cao Van Binh's goal after receiving through balls, U22 China is more solid because the structure and distance of the formation are always guaranteed. Therefore, despite holding the ball a lot, Khuat Van Khang, Thanh Nhan and their teammates only pass the ball in the peripheral area, with many passes back when realizing that all spaces have been blocked.
However, the U22 Vietnam players were very calm in their approach, patiently coordinating and waiting for opportunities. There were very few hasty moves or lucky passes. They also tried very hard to create breakthroughs through one-touch combinations and smart movements. The 44th minute pass, with Quoc Viet's pass for Thanh Nhan to finish, was an example, and Minh Phuc's goal was another example. This will be very useful in the upcoming 33rd SEA Games, when U22 Vietnam will encounter large and dense defenses.

For impatient fans, these types of plays are too few. They want more. However, it is important to understand that our physical foundation is not enough to maintain a high tempo and intensity continuously.
Moreover, the opponent of U22 Vietnam is U22 China and pursues a tight, direct defensive style of play with a highly disciplined 5-3-2 system. Not only that, the red shirt players all possess superior physique and strength, which is easily seen in most one-on-one situations.
The Chinese justified that this time U22 China did not gather all the best players. However, it should be noted that before the match U22 Vietnam only had one training session with the full squad, while Le Viktor and Nguyen Dinh Bac were not at 100% fitness and sat out the whole match.

Of course, U22 Vietnam still has a lot to improve. As mentioned above, many times coach Dinh Hong Vinh's students did not maintain their formation and cover, creating many gaps for the opponent to exploit. If it were not for U22 China's poor finishing and goalkeeper Cao Van Binh's excellent performance, we could have conceded more than once.
Next, the young Gold Stars still need to hone their high-octane attacks, while creating more frequency to break down disciplined defenses. To do this, their stamina must also be improved.
On November 15, U22 Vietnam will meet U22 Uzbekistan, then U22 Korea on November 18. These matches promise to be even more difficult, and hopefully we will see more positive results, and the limitations will soon be overcome so that U22 Vietnam is truly ready for the goal of hunting for gold at the 33rd SEA Games.
