After the impressive achievements at the 32nd SEA Games, what experts are concerned about now is how the athletes will maintain their training and competition regime. This is always an issue that attracts public attention, because to achieve high results in the region, Asia and internationally, we need long-term investment and a specific plan.
The Vietnamese sports delegation won big at the 32nd SEA Games, but to reach the ASIAD and Olympic level, more systematic and long-term investment is needed.
Impressive achievements
At the 32nd SEA Games, the Vietnamese sports delegation set a target of winning 89 to 120 gold medals. According to Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Head of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at the 32nd SEA Games, Vietnam has basically exceeded the target set before departure. These figures show the strong development of Vietnamese sports in recent times and affirm its position in the regional arena.
At the end of the 32nd SEA Games, the Vietnamese sports delegation not only exceeded the target of winning gold medals, but also had some outstanding athletes break records in this competition. In total, Vietnamese athletes broke 12 records and set 4 new records in the SEA Games arena. In particular, the most encouraging sign was the appearance of many outstanding athletes in Olympic sports. The total number of gold medals in Olympic sports of Vietnam was 65, Thailand (56 gold medals), Indonesia (41 gold medals) and Singapore (41 gold medals).
Notably, Vietnam has many sports in the Olympic and Asian Games competition system that have risen to the top of the region, ranking first overall, such as: Wrestling (13 gold medals), gymnastics (4 gold medals), Judo (8 gold medals), Karatedo (6 gold medals), Athletics (12 gold medals), Taekwondo (4 gold medals), Fencing (4 gold medals), Weightlifting (4 gold medals), Wushu (6 gold medals). Although they have competed successfully and won gold medals in Olympic events, the achievements of Vietnamese athletes are still relatively far behind the achievements of the continent and the world . Therefore, if they want to achieve high results at the 2023 ASIAD in September in Hangzhou, China and the 2024 Olympics, Vietnamese sports need to focus on investing in improving key athletes and coaches.
There are two subjects that have not yet completed the target.
In addition to the Olympic sports that have successfully exceeded or completed their targets, the two sports of athletics and swimming have not yet completed their gold medal targets set at the 32nd SEA Games. Of which, athletics had 14 gold medals but only achieved 12. There are many objective and subjective reasons affecting the overall performance of the team such as weather and performance, but the main reason is that Vietnamese athletics lacked the strongest force due to some athletes testing positive for doping at the 31st SEA Games. The use of naturalized athletes by regional competitors is also the reason why athletics did not complete the set target.
In swimming, Vietnam has set its main goal as the 2023 ASIAD. The 32nd SEA Games is a stepping stone for the team to evaluate and prepare for the continental arena. The good news is that the swimmers have broken two records in the 100m and 200m butterfly events and the rapid growth of young athletes such as Nguyen Thuy Hien (14 years old), or Ho Nguyen Duy Khoa (18 years old) who won a bronze medal in their first SEA Games participation.
At the 32nd SEA Games, Vietnamese sports have produced many excellent young athletes who have achieved high results. However, the number is still quite small and this is an issue that industry leaders need to pay more attention to in training young athletes... In addition, socialization in sports, mobilizing resources from localities and sponsors to focus on investing in key sports and strong sports together with the State budget is also an issue that needs attention.
The success of 16 basic sports in the Olympic competition system that Vietnamese athletes achieved at the 32nd SEA Games is the premise for Vietnamese sports to have an overview, from which to have the right direction to develop in accordance with the orientation of developing Vietnamese sports until 2035. Doing this well, we will have top sports athletes, ready to conquer gold medals at ASIAD or Olympics in the shortest time.
“At the 32nd SEA Games, the Olympic sports group brought home nearly 50% of the gold medals for Vietnam. But in reality, to be able to compete for gold medals at the ASIAD or the Olympics, this number must be at 80% at the SEA Games. But such an assessment is very difficult because we do not have an overall view of the Olympic sports at the 32nd SEA Games. This time, many of Vietnam's strong Olympic sports were not organized, such as: Rowing, shooting, archery... Olympic martial arts were only registered for 70% of the total number of competitions. Therefore, the assessment of the achievements of the Olympic sports this time is not comprehensive and unclear.” (Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Head of Vietnam Sports Delegation at SEA Games 32) |
