Overview of the working session

The Deputy Minister emphasized that Vietnamese Sports needs to strive to overcome all difficulties, not blame objective reasons, strive to win about 100 gold medals, and make achievements to welcome the 14th National Congress of the Party.

Set high determination

Also attending the meeting were Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Department Nguyen Hong Minh, along with professional departments and head coaches of national teams.

Reporting at the meeting, representatives of the departments said that, up to now, the preparation work for the SEA Games of the teams has almost been completed; the teams are actively practicing to prepare for the Congress.

It is assessed that this is a difficult SEA Games with the host country Thailand's ambition to regain the overall lead, as well as the fact that all countries have made large investments and prepared carefully, and Vietnam has lost many of its strong events and content, which won gold medals at previous Games, but the events have clearly shown their determination at this Games.

In Athletics, although the team is in the process of rejuvenating its force, the whole team is determined to win at least 12 gold medals. Meanwhile, in Rowing, after positive signals in the tournaments before the SEA Games, the Rowing Department and the team's coaching staff have re-analyzed the balance of power and decided to increase the target from 6 to 8 gold medals.

Directly listening to each sport's report, carefully analyzing the difficulties as well as the advantages at this SEA Games, Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong gave timely instructions to remove difficulties as well as review the medal targets of the sports. The Deputy Minister and specialized departments reviewed and carefully analyzed the opportunities in each event to adjust the targets and balance the number of athletes accordingly.

According to the latest information, Thailand will send about 1,300-1,500 athletes to compete at the Games, with the goal of winning about 200 gold medals, leading the entire delegation. The Deputy Minister commented that this clearly shows the ambition of the host country.

Another big rival of the Vietnamese sports delegation at this SEA Games is Indonesia. The archipelago country plans to send 1,000 athletes with the goal of winning 92 gold medals, ranking second at the Games. In addition, the Philippine delegation also plans to send about 1,000 members to participate while the Singapore delegation is 800 people. Therefore, the Deputy Minister analyzed that the Vietnamese Sports need to recalculate the balance of forces and medal targets to match the goals of the Games.

To achieve the above goal, the Deputy Minister requested the Vietnam Sports Department and training centers to closely follow the training roadmap and curriculum to promptly resolve difficulties. Teams also need to adjust their training plans to be systematic, scientific , flexible, effective, and meet requirements. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to taking good care of and recovering athletes, helping them to have the best physical condition and form.

The Deputy Minister also requested departments to carefully review the composition of the Congress participants to ensure efficiency and avoid waste; giving priority to capable athletes and young athletes for the goals of the 2026 Asian Games and 2028 Olympics.

The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 2025) will be hosted by Thailand from December 9 to 20, 2025, with the theme “Bringing Southeast Asia Together”. This year’s Games aim to demonstrate the spirit of solidarity, sustainable development and innovation, spreading the spirit of sportsmanship throughout Thailand.

Although Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla are the three main venues, the 33rd SEA Games will be held across 10 provinces including: Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Pathom, Chonburi, Rayong, Songkhla, Chiang Mai and Ratchaburi. This will also cause many difficulties for the delegations because the forces are dispersed and have to spread out to many locations.
