Rice export price on May 19
In the export market, Vietnamese rice prices continue to remain high and affirm their competitive position in the international market. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), as of May 15, Vietnamese 5% broken rice is being offered for sale at around 398 - 402 USD/ton.
This price is higher than the same type of India (382 - 386 USD/ton) and Pakistan (389 - 393 USD/ton), and is the highest level since April. This development shows that the export rice market is recovering firmly after the decline in the first quarter.
Other rice varieties also recorded stable prices. 25% broken rice is currently traded at $368 per tonne, while 100% broken rice fluctuates around $321 per tonne.
In the premium rice segment, rice varieties such as OM 5451 and OM 18 continue to be positively received by the international market with prices ranging from 500 - 530 USD/ton. In particular, specialty rice varieties such as ST25 and organic rice still maintain their value, ranging from 800 - 1,200 USD/ton - one of the highest prices in the global rice market today.
Thanks to that, the average export price of Vietnamese rice is currently maintained at over 500 USD/ton, equivalent to about 12,000 VND/kg - a high level showing the stability of both quality and reputation of Vietnamese rice brand in the international market.
The recent recovery in rice export prices is mainly due to the strong return of demand from strategic markets such as the Philippines, China, Africa and the Middle East. In the context of volatile weather and global food security being put on top, many countries are increasing their reserves, creating a golden opportunity for major exporting countries such as Vietnam.
The fact that global supply and demand are gradually re-establishing a favorable balance for producers not only creates conditions to boost selling prices but also helps Vietnam increase its negotiating capacity, expand market share, and raise the value of rice on the world export map.
