On May 31, the Hanoi Rheumatology Association coordinated with Duc Giang General Hospital to organize the 2025 Annual Scientific Conference, focusing on discussing musculoskeletal diseases, especially osteoarthritis.
According to Professor, Dr. Nguyen Vinh Ngoc, Vice President of the Hanoi Rheumatology Association, osteoarthritis is one of the most common musculoskeletal diseases in the world . In the US, 80% of people over 55 years old have this disease, while in France, osteoarthritis accounts for 28% of all musculoskeletal diseases.
In Vietnam, osteoarthritis is also a worrying health problem, accounting for more than 10% of musculoskeletal diseases. This is the second most common musculoskeletal disease seen by general practitioners and is the leading cause of disability.

Osteoarthritis causes a significant economic burden, estimated to be up to 2.5% of GDP in developed countries. It is the result of an imbalance between synthesis and destruction of cartilage and subchondral bone due to mechanical and biological factors.
Among the forms of osteoarthritis, knee osteoarthritis is the most common, seriously affecting mobility, work capacity and quality of life. Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that 20% of patients with joint disease have knee osteoarthritis, and about 20% of them suffer from persistent pain and functional decline after 12 months.
The incidence of knee osteoarthritis increases with age, especially after age 50, and is the leading cause of disability in people over 65. Typical symptoms include pain, morning stiffness (less than 30 minutes), increased with movement and decreased with rest.
Professor Ngoc also informed about current treatment methods, including medical treatment, physical therapy, rehabilitation and surgery (such as osteotomy, artificial knee replacement).
Medical measures include anti-inflammatory analgesics during acute attacks, slow-acting anti-osteoarthritis drugs, fluid aspiration, intra-articular corticosteroid injection, joint fluid supplementation with Hyaluronic Acid, and platelet-rich plasma injection.
Notably, one of the new trends in regenerative medicine today is the application of mesenchymal stem cell therapy in the treatment of bone and joint diseases in general and knee osteoarthritis in particular, opening up new hope for patients.

Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Director of Duc Giang General Hospital, emphasized that musculoskeletal diseases, especially osteoarthritis, are creating a great economic and social burden for both families and the community. Therefore, finding new solutions to reduce this burden in the future is extremely necessary.
This conference is considered a valuable opportunity for doctors to update the latest information and treatment trends on musculoskeletal diseases, arthritis, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, as well as infectious problems in musculoskeletal diseases.
The presentations at the conference focused on many in-depth contents such as: Updating ASAS-EULAR recommendations in the treatment of arthritis - spine; Application of regenerative medicine in knee osteoarthritis; and Challenges and solutions in the treatment of osteoporosis in Vietnam.
