MU created many good opportunities but the conversion rate into goals was poor. |
According to the expected goals (xG) model, MU created the most scoring chances in the Premier League 2025/26 with 15.72 xG, surpassing both Arsenal (13.75) and Chelsea (12.94). However, the "Red Devils" only ranked 10th on the rankings with 10 points after 7 rounds, scored 9 goals and conceded 11 times.
This shows that MU's finishing performance is extremely poor. Despite creating the most chances in the tournament, coach Ruben Amorim's team only converted more than half of those chances into goals, the lowest rate among the top 10 teams. For comparison, Arsenal (top of the table with 16 points) scored 14 goals, while Liverpool (15 points) had 13 goals.
Chelsea - the team ranked 7th with 11 points, also had a better performance, scoring 9 goals from 12.94 xG, almost reaching the expected efficiency. On the contrary, MU's attack, although rated by the "computer" as the most creative and dynamic in the tournament, lacked precision in finishing.
The contrast between statistics and reality is gradually becoming a sore issue at Old Trafford. In the opening match against Arsenal 0-1 on August 17, MU launched 25 shots and hit the target 7 times but did not score. In contrast, the "Gunners" only needed 3 shots on target out of 9 shots to finish MU.
If they do not improve their chance conversion soon, MU is at risk of repeating the familiar tragedy of playing well but not winning. Meanwhile, Arsenal and Liverpool, despite creating fewer chances, know how to make the most of them to compete for the championship.
