The fact that the Xiaomi 17 Pro uses a plastic back has surprised many users. Photo: JerryRigEverything . |
Xiaomi just launched the Xiaomi 17 series of smartphones in China a few weeks ago. Recently, famous YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything channel conducted rigorous durability tests on the Xiaomi 17 Pro. The testing process revealed a surprising truth about the latest flagship model from Xiaomi.
Specifically, Xiaomi has used plastic material instead of glass for the back of the 17 Pro. Although plastic material has the advantage of good heat dissipation and is harder to break than glass, this decision may surprise many customers, especially when plastic backs often appear on many smartphones in the lower segment.
In the video , viewers can clearly see that Zack easily used a box cutter to scratch the plastic back of the Xiaomi 17 Pro. After using a hair dryer to melt the glue, the back when removed was also easily bent, further strengthening the evidence that the material that makes up this back is plastic.
In return, with the frame made from anodized aluminum, the phone still maintains a solid feel and a sturdy appearance. However, the use of a plastic back may disappoint many users who expect a glass back in the high-end segment.

Aside from the back, the most notable aspect of the durability test was the screen's superior scratch resistance. Xiaomi has equipped it with a glass called "Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0", which can withstand damage at level 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. This is considered a significant improvement, as most other flagship devices usually start to show scratches at level 6 Mohs.
While Zack doesn't rate Dragon Crystal Glass on par with the Ceramic Shield glass on the iPhone 17 Pro, he does say the Xiaomi 17 Pro's glass performs better than any Android phone he's tested. However, the secondary display on the back only uses standard tempered glass and is easily scratched at the Mohs level of 6.
Moving on to the bend test, the Xiaomi 17 Pro once again performed brilliantly. The smartphone showed no signs of cracking or deformation when bent by hand.
The sturdy internal structure allows the device to withstand high pressure without damage - a rarity in phones with plastic backs. The aluminum frame helps the device absorb impact effectively, minimizing the risk of falling.
Zack then proceeded to remove the back cover to "examine" the details inside the phone, showing the component layout and effective cooling system. His conclusion is that the Xiaomi 17 Pro is one of the most durable flagships of the year, although it has not reached perfection in terms of body construction materials.
The Xiaomi 17 series is currently only sold in China and is expected to release an international version in early 2026.
