On the morning of December 2, in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, the Ministry of Industry and Trade coordinated with the Provincial People's Committee to organize the Vietnam Logistics Forum 2024 with the theme "Free Trade Zone - Breakthrough Solutions to Promote Logistics Growth". Speaking at the opening of the conference, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Industry and Trade, said that logistics is a service industry considered the "blood vessels" of the economy, playing an important role in connecting and supporting businesses.
Vietnam is considered one of the markets with great potential and conditions for developing logistics services. Our country's logistics service industry grows by an average of 14-16% per year, ranking in the top 10 emerging logistics markets, top 4 in the world in terms of logistics opportunity index and top 43 in terms of logistics efficiency index.

However, the development of Vietnam's logistics service industry has not been commensurate with its potential and advantages. Logistics costs are still high, competitiveness is low, and there is a shortage of human resources, especially high-quality human resources.
In particular, there is a lack of infrastructure connectivity, which is a major "bottleneck" that hinders the development of logistics services.
"Free trade zones will be one of the important competitive advantages and effective tools for countries to maximize benefits.
With its strategic and potential geographical location, strengths in developing deep-water seaport infrastructure, international airports, and road and railway traffic hubs, Vietnam has all the favorable conditions to build and develop large-scale and modern free trade zones," said Mr. Dien.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Industry and Trade, delivered the opening speech at the forum.
Mr. Pham Viet Thanh, Secretary of the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Provincial Party Committee, said that the locality is the gateway to the East Sea of the Southeast region and the whole country. Recently, the inter-regional transport network has been invested synchronously, along with Long Thanh airport and Cai Mep - Thi Vai port associated with the development of national and international logistics centers according to the model of "green port, green logistics" to meet the requirements of international integration and sustainable development.
Therefore, the formation of a free trade zone associated with a seaport in Cai Mep Ha area is a strategic step to complete the logistics infrastructure of the Southeast region.
The early establishment of Cai Mep Ha free trade zone connecting with Long Thanh airport and Cai Mep - Thi Vai deep-water seaport in a synchronous manner will create an absolute competitive advantage for the country, creating a new driving force in attracting investment on the East-West economic corridor from Moc Bai to Cai Mep - Thi Vai.
Ba Ria - Vung Tau is strong in seaports and logistics.
According to Mr. Thanh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has focused on mobilizing and effectively using all resources, selectively attracting investment with modern technology, high automation, non-labor intensive, and environmental protection.
In 2024 alone, Ba Ria - Vung Tau's GRDP is estimated to grow by over 10.52%. To date, it has attracted investment equivalent to about 50 billion USD, of which foreign direct investment (FDI) is about 34 billion USD.
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) proposed groups of solutions to turn logistics into a high value-added service industry such as legal policies and institutions.
Mr. Dang Vu Thanh - Vice President of Vietnam Logistics Business Association also proposed many contents, including building a strategy for the industry, especially focusing on innovation in technology and automation, having a policy mechanism to encourage investment in logistics infrastructure. Developing synchronous intra-regional linkages between transport infrastructure, logistics infrastructure, seaport - airport - border gate infrastructure, etc.

The three goals include reducing logistics costs to 15%; increasing the scale of logistics in GRDP to 15%, striving for 20%; increasing the scale of Vietnam's logistics service industry in the total scale of the world from 0.4 to 0.5%, striving for 0.6%.

Regarding solutions, the Prime Minister requested to raise awareness and the role of logistics in economic development to maximize potential and opportunities, create breakthroughs, and contribute to bringing the country into a new era of wealth and prosperity.
Mechanisms and procedures must be transparent to reduce costs and time for people and businesses. Along with that, it is necessary to build a smooth logistics infrastructure, reduce input costs, increase competition, and develop aviation, maritime, and high-speed railways.
