On April 12, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son received Ms. Pauline Tamesis, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Vietnam.
At the reception, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized the importance of multilateralism and the role of the United Nations in coordinating multilateral efforts to respond to common challenges of the international community today due to the impact of global economic difficulties, climate change, food crisis, water security, strategic competition between major countries, etc.
Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam considers the United Nations one of its top priority partners and always remembers the valuable cooperation and support of the United Nations to Vietnam during the country's development over the past nearly five decades. The Minister hopes that the UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam will be an effective bridge between UN organizations and the Vietnamese government , agencies, ministries and sectors, further promoting the Vietnam-United Nations cooperation relationship.
In that context, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that United Nations organizations prioritize promoting four priority areas of cooperation in the coming time.
Firstly, mobilizing resources and successfully implementing the Vietnam - United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Strategic Framework for the 2022-2026 period, contributing to accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Vietnam.
Second, policy advice and technical support for Vietnam in the process of socio-economic recovery and development.
Third, support Vietnam in adapting to climate change, energy transition, mobilizing green finance, and implementing international commitments on climate change.
Fourth, support Vietnamese citizens to apply for positions in the United Nations system.
For her part, UN Resident Coordinator Pauline Tamesis praised Vietnam's proactive, positive and effective contributions to multilateralism and the activities of the United Nations. Ms. Pauline Tamesis emphasized that despite facing many difficulties and challenges, especially due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam still maintains a strong commitment to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
UN Resident Coordinator Pauline Tamesis said that from the COVID-19 pandemic, the international community has realized that crisis can also be an opportunity for innovation and a stronger comeback. In that context, UN organizations are committed to continuing to stand side by side and accompany Vietnam so that it can seize new opportunities and respond to challenges, mobilizing international resources to serve sustainable and inclusive development in Vietnam.
Ms. Pauline Tamesis shared that in the context of global Official Development Assistance (ODA) tending to decrease by 10-20% each year, the United Nations is working with Vietnam to build a strategy to mobilize international resources, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam's major development goals.
On this occasion, Ms. Pauline Tamesis affirmed that she is determined to work with United Nations organizations in Vietnam to effectively implement cooperation orientations as proposed by Minister Bui Thanh Son, contributing to the realization of Vietnam's socio-economic development goals./.
