Promoting tourism cooperation between Vietnam-Brunei, Mekong sub-region and BIMP-EAGA sub-region

On November 6, the Vietnamese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam organized a workshop on “Promoting Vietnam-Brunei tourism cooperation, Mekong sub-region-BIMP-EAGA sub-region” with the participation of Ambassador Tran Anh Vu and representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism of Brunei, the Trade and Tourism Office of Sarawak State (Malaysia) in Brunei, travel companies and the Brunei press.

At the workshop, Ambassador Tran Anh Vu introduced trends in sustainable tourism recovery and development after the Covid-19 pandemic and policy implications for Vietnam. Brunei, Mekong sub-region and BIMP-EAGA sub-region (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines).

In particular, the increasing trend of tourists from Asian countries, the increasing interest of tourists in sustainable tourism, eco-tourism and the great potential of Halal tourism are both opportunities and advantages for Vietnam, Brunei and the Mekong countries and the BIMP-EAGA sub-region to promote cooperation and connect tourism to become a driving force for sustainable growth.

Ambassador Tran Anh Vu hopes that 2025 will witness a new development in tourism cooperation between Vietnam and Brunei and the BIMP-EAGA countries in the context of Vietnam celebrating many important holidays and events, while promoting the attraction of tourists in the region, including Muslim tourists from the BIMP-EAGA countries with a population of nearly 400 million people.

Brunei, Borneo Island and BIMP-EAGA countries can also become potential destinations for Vietnamese tourists thanks to their advantages in natural landscapes, environment, eco-tourism, transport connectivity projects, intra-bloc tourism, as well as Indonesia moving its capital to Nusantara city on Borneo Island.

Ambassador Tran Anh Vu said that with favorable geographical location and direct flights between the two countries, Vietnam and Brunei can play the role of a tourism gateway between the Mekong sub-region and BIMP-EAGA. This is also an idea that Bruneian government agencies and businesses are interested in sharing. The Vietnamese Embassy in Brunei will continue to coordinate with partners to promote tourism in Vietnam, Brunei, the Mekong sub-region and BIMP-EAGA sub-region, and encourage tourism and travel businesses to study and open tourism routes connecting countries and sub-regions in the coming time.

Partners and businesses from Brunei and Malaysia highly appreciated the potential for cooperation and tourism connection with Vietnam, and welcomed the policies implemented by the Vietnamese Government in recent times such as applying e-visas for citizens of all countries, enhancing air connectivity, promoting Halal tourism through promoting the development of Halal services such as restaurants, hotels, places of worship, etc.

Ms. Salinah Binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Director General of Tourism Development, Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism of Brunei, emphasized that Brunei's policy is to attract tourists selectively, focusing on quality and sustainability, in which Vietnam is a potential partner.

Ms. Salinah said the number of tourists from Vietnam to Brunei is on the recovery trend after the pandemic, reaching about 4,000 visitors in the first 9 months of 2024.

In 2025, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism of Brunei identified Vietnam as a priority market to attract tourists and will coordinate with the Embassy and partners to promote tourism, including creative communication measures, practical cultural experience tourism packages and Islamic tourism.

The Brunei Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism also plans to cooperate with a number of influential Vietnamese individuals on social media to promote Brunei tourism in the coming time.

At the workshop, many Brunei tourism businesses were interested in the possibility of cooperation and connection with Vietnamese travel and tourism companies to exploit potential tourism routes.

The Sarawak State Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei said that although the number of Vietnamese visitors to Sarawak and the number of visitors from Sarawak to Vietnam are still limited, Sarawak highly appreciates the potential for tourism cooperation and wishes to promote and connect tourism with Vietnam and its partners. Mekong sub-region

Accordingly, delegates attending the Workshop discussed a number of measures to promote and connect tourism in a practical manner in 2025 and the coming time.

Tourism is a potential area of ​​cooperation between Vietnam and Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

In the first 9 months of 2024, tourists from Asian countries to Vietnam grew positively, including more than 300,000 Malaysian tourists and more than 130,000 Indonesian tourists.

Regarding bilateral tourism cooperation between Vietnam and Brunei, within the framework of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh 's official visit to Brunei (February 2023), the two Governments approved the Action Program to implement the bilateral Comprehensive Partnership for the period 2023-2027, identifying tourism and people-to-people exchange as priority areas of cooperation.

Currently, Brunei Airlines operates 6 weekly flights directly connecting Brunei and Ho Chi Minh City with the number of passengers in 2023 reaching more than 12,000 people.
