Since the advent of cancer treatment, resection has been the best way to cure cancer, according to Luis Diaz, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA, and co-leader of the research team.

But new findings suggest that removing the tumor is not the only option.

The study included data from 103 patients with solid tumors from gastrointestinal cancers affecting organs such as the stomach, bladder and intestines, which are often treated with surgery.

The trial found that 80% of patients treated with the immunotherapy drug dostarlimab did not need chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, including organ removal.

Of the 103 patients, 49 had rectal cancer and their tumors had completely disappeared within six months of treatment, with no recurrence after five years. Thirty-five of the 54 patients had cancerous tumors that also disappeared in their colon, bladder, esophagus, and stomach.
