US Senate moves to end government shutdown

(CLO) US senators are working through the weekend to find a compromise to end the record-long 39-day government shutdown.

Although the Republicans and Democrats met all day on November 8, they still did not reach an agreement. The Senate will meet again on November 9 to continue the discussion.

The budget crisis is having a devastating impact, leaving hundreds of thousands of government workers unpaid, flights canceled and food aid to millions of people delayed.

The main conflict is over health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. Democrats want to extend these subsidies for another year before reopening the government, while Republicans demand that the government be reopened first before discussing health care.

President Donald Trump has opposed the Democrats' plan. On social media, he said that instead of sending money to insurance companies, the government should transfer subsidies directly to people so they can buy health care themselves. There are currently about 24 million Americans who receive subsidies under the ACA.

Meanwhile, some moderate lawmakers from both parties are trying to find a temporary solution, proposing to fund some key programs like food aid, veterans care and Congress, while extending the rest of the budget until December or January.

The plan does not guarantee the extension of health care benefits, but only promises a vote on the issue at a future date. It is unclear whether there is enough support to pass it, especially since neither Mr. Trump nor House Speaker Mike Johnson has committed to agreeing.

Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, but need at least 60 votes to pass a bill to reopen the government.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer warned that if Congress fails to act, millions of people could lose their insurance, fall into debt and become more ill.

“We can’t continue to stand still,” he said. “People need their government to function again, and they need to be protected.”
