Venezuela sends more than 5,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba

(CLO) Venezuela has sent more than 5,000 tons of humanitarian aid to support victims of Hurricane Melissa in Cuba.

In an interview, Mr. Rander Pena, executive secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA), said the aid included food, medicine, household goods and even children's toys, to support Cubans devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

He stressed that the aid will be transported by ALBA ships under the orders of President Nicolas Maduro.

According to Mr. Pena, this action demonstrates Venezuela's commitment to peace , cooperation between peoples and solidarity with Cuba. Previously, on October 30, Venezuela also sent 26 tons of aid via Conviasa airline.

Hurricane Melissa, a category 5 storm, hit in late October, causing heavy damage to Caribbean island nations, with Jamaica and Haiti suffering more than 30 and 40 victims, respectively.

The storm also hit eastern Cuba, causing severe damage, but there is no word yet on the number of deaths on the island.
