Thai jackfruit prices are currently falling sharply. |
According to records, currently, gardeners in Cai Lay area, Cai Be district, Tien Giang province sell Thai jackfruit grade 1 for about 10,000 VND/kg; grade 2, 3 prices are only about 6,000 - 4,000 VND/kg and market goods are 2,000 VND/kg.
Along with Thai jackfruit, the price of red-fleshed jackfruit in the province has also dropped sharply in recent days. Specifically, grade 1 red-fleshed jackfruit costs about 24,000 VND/kg; grade 2 costs 14,000 VND/kg; grade 3 is 7,000 VND/kg. At this price, jackfruit growers do not make a profit, and even suffer losses if the number of jackfruits with unattractive appearance accounts for a large proportion.
Mr. Pham Van Tam's family (Phu Quy commune, Cai Lay town) grows 2 hectares of Thai jackfruit. According to Mr. Tam, last month, his family sold grade 1 Thai jackfruit for 22,000 VND/kg. This price ensures that the gardeners make a good profit. However, in recent days, Thai jackfruit prices have dropped sharply. Currently, traders only buy at prices ranging from 4,000 - 6,000 VND/kg, so the gardeners are facing difficulties.
According to some farmers, at this time, Thai jackfruit is in peak harvest season, and the slow consumption market has led to a sharp drop in prices.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture, Tien Giang is one of the localities with the largest Thai jackfruit growing area in the Mekong Delta with an area of over 15,800 hectares, with an output of 332,000 tons. In previous years, the Thai jackfruit growing area increased rapidly due to the crop conversion movement as well as the economic value that this crop brings.
However, after durian was officially exported, farmers increased the cultivation of durian, and Thai jackfruit could no longer maintain its position as before.
