Round 2 Negotiations of the Vietnam-US Reciprocal Trade Agreement

The US Ambassador appreciated Vietnam's goodwill and efforts in handling issues of US concern, and hoped that the two sides would continue to promote exchanges to achieve results in the shortest time possible.

From May 19-22, the second round of negotiations on the bilateral reciprocal trade agreement between Vietnam and the US took place in Washington, DC, US.

The Vietnamese negotiating delegation was led by Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiating Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien, with the participation of negotiating delegation members and representatives of ministries and sectors including: Public Security, Foreign Affairs , Finance, Construction, Home Affairs, Agriculture and Environment, Science and Technology, Justice and the State Bank.

During the three days of negotiations, with great determination and effort, the Vietnamese and US negotiating delegations discussed all the contents raised before the negotiation session in the spirit of goodwill, frankness, respect for institutions, harmony and balance of interests, as well as in accordance with international commitments and the development level of each country.

The two sides spent time providing each other with information on each side's current policies, clarifying the contents of the Agreement text, and discussing a comprehensive approach to addressing fundamental issues of mutual concern to accelerate the negotiation process.

The negotiating delegations of the two sides also had open and constructive discussions on economic and trade issues of core interests of both countries.

At the end of the negotiation round, Vietnam and the US made positive progress, identifying groups of issues on which consensus was reached or views were close, and groups of issues that need further discussion to reach agreement in the coming time.

In addition, the two sides also set time frames for feedback on the draft Agreement, proposed text, and held online meetings to prepare for the next negotiation session.

At the end of the third working day, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien had a negotiation session with Ambassador and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to agree on the results of the second round of negotiations and point out the contents that need to continue to be focused on in early June.

Ambassador Greer appreciated Vietnam's goodwill and efforts in handling issues of US concern and hoped that the two sides would continue to promote technical exchanges, including at the ministerial level, to achieve results as soon as possible.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien welcomed Ambassador Greer's assessments and affirmed Vietnam's determination to build and promote economic and trade relations with the US in a balanced and sustainable manner for the benefit of the people and businesses of the two countries.

The Minister agreed with Ambassador Greer to assign technical levels of both sides to continue to increase exchanges to soon reach an agreement that meets the expectations and conditions of each side./.
