After returning home from the 2025 Panda Cup international friendly tournament in China, Van Truong was taken to the hospital to have his injury re-examined. According to the doctor's conclusion, his right knee ligament was more severe than initially predicted, forcing him to undergo surgery.
Having to undergo surgery, Van Truong will have to rest for 8-10 months, which means he will miss the 33rd SEA Games, the 2026 U23 Asian Finals and the end of the 2025-2026 V-League season.

Previously, in the final match of the Panda Cup 2025 international friendly tournament between U22 Vietnam and U22 Korea on November 18, in the 7th minute, Nguyen Van Truong had a strong collision with an opposing player and landed poorly.
He appeared to be in great pain and had to leave the field on a stretcher, leaving U22 Vietnam to play with only 10 players on the field as coach Dinh Hong Vinh used all his substitutions.
Losing Van Truong is a big loss for U22 Vietnam. The player born in 2003 plays an important role in the midfield, possessing the ability to control the tempo, compete in one-on-one matches as well as the ability to shoot from a distance. It is not yet clear whether coach Kim Sang Sik will call up anyone to replace Van Truong or not.
According to the plan, U22 Vietnam will gather again in Vung Tau (HCMC) on November 23, before going to Thailand on December 2 to officially enter the SEA Games 33 campaign. In this tournament, U22 Vietnam will play the opening match against U22 Laos (December 4), then meet U22 Malaysia (December 11).
