"Me Linh Drum Sound" captivates audiences

The Huong Tram Cai Luong Troupe brought “Tieng Trong Me Linh” to the communes in Phu Tan district, and was enthusiastically received by the audience. The stage curtain opened every night, attracting 300-500 spectators. Ms. Huynh Thi Hong, an audience member of Viet Thang commune, excitedly said: “When we heard that the troupe was coming to perform the play “Tieng Trong Me Linh”, my neighbors and I talked to each other that we would not miss it tonight. I had watched this play on TV before, but it has been a long time since I have seen it live on stage like this, the feeling is hard to describe. "The Drum of Me Linh" is a classic Cai Luong play by playwright Vinh Dien, first performed in 1977. The original work of the play was a Cheo play called "Trung Vuong" by playwright Viet Dung. The play's content is about the uprising of the Trung Sisters. During the period of Chinese domination, under the harsh rule of governor To Dinh, even the Hung King's death anniversary was not held. Because of her patriotism, Trung Trac set up an altar to worship her husband, and together with her sister Trung Nhi, led the people of the South to revolt against the invaders.

The excerpt "Tieng Trong Me Linh" directed by Meritorious Artist Lich Su, Head of Cai Luong Troupe Huong Tram, shows the meticulousness in staging and renewing the historical atmosphere. The roles are placed to fit and be delicate. Despite the pressure, the artists still devoted their efforts to researching the characters' psychology and consider it a source of pride and happiness to be able to devote themselves to the art of Cai Luong. Meritorious Artist Hoa Phuong confided: "The script "Tieng Trong Me Linh" performed by the late Artist Thanh Nga was so famous, it was deeply ingrained in people's hearts, creating a lot of pressure for those who came after. When I took on the role of Trung Trac, I watched the performances of previous artists many times to learn, dig deeper, and find a suitable way to express it."

In the small space of the stage, the artists of the Huong Tram Opera Troupe took the audience back in time to relive the heroic historical period of the nation. Meritorious Artist Hoa Phuong successfully recreated the image of Trung Trac, a woman with intelligence, strategic talent, a kind heart and courage, "on one shoulder carrying the burden of the country, on the other shoulder carrying the burden of love".

The audience was both moved and proud when the character Trung Trac loudly swore an oath to the country: "My fellow countrymen/The Eastern Han invaders are trampling on the country/There is no greater shame than the shame of being a foreign slave/I would rather die standing up/I would rather not live on my knees/The beautiful Southern country/The heroic Southern people/Before the temple of the National Ancestor/I swear to sacrifice myself to kill the enemy to save the country/I swear!" . The sound of the bronze drum echoing in the decisive moment of the Trung Sisters' start-up was a sacred call, making the audience feel proud of the heroic spirit of Au Lac.
