Green coffee is trading at Sh7,800 per kg at Rushango Town Council, Ibanda North District. Farmers and traders said this is the highest price recorded in five years due to increased demand from coffee exporters and processors in Kampala.

According to Tanazio Monday, a coffee farmer and processor at Rushango Town Council, this is the highest price farmers have seen in more than five years. Farmers are happy and hope prices will rise further. Some who have abandoned their plantations are trying to recover.

Geoffrey Katatsya, a coffee trader in the town of Ibanda, expects prices to rise further in the coming weeks due to demand and the quality of the beans. The robusta harvest season began in mid-April and is expected to end in the second half of July.

Meanwhile, Arabica coffee beans fell, trading at Sh9,000 per kg from Sh9,500 per kg previously.

Mr Katatsya attributed the decline to low-quality coffee beans as the arabica harvest season has ended. “Currently, the coffee beans coming to the market are small in size and of poor quality, with low yields,” he said.

The next arabica coffee harvest season begins in September, according to New Vision .

According to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority's indicative prices for June 5, Kiboko coffee was at Sh3,500 - Sh3,800/kg, FAQ (fair quality) ranged from Sh7,500 - Sh8,000/kg, arabica parchment was at Sh8,500 - Sh9,000/kg and Dry Uganda arabica (drugar coffee) (clean) was priced at Sh8,000 - Sh8,500/kg.
