The creature has a distinctive shape, with 20 arms branching out from the center of its body, resembling a strawberry. |
The creature was discovered during a survey in the Southern Ocean as the team searched for the enigmatic marine animal Promachocrinus, also known as the Antarctic feather star. |
The Antarctic strawberry feather star is triangular in shape, wider at the top and tapering at the bottom. |
Their distinguishing feature is their 20 branching, strawberry-like arms, which can range in color from purple to dark red. |
The shorter arms are lower, striped and bumpy, while the longer arms are almost hairy and soft. Their appearance bears a strong resemblance to the Facehugger, the first alien introduced in the 1979 film Alien. |
Based on body shape and DNA analysis, researchers confirmed this is a new species. |
They are found throughout the Southern Ocean, from depths of about 65m to 1.2km. |
In addition to Promachocrinus fragarius, three new species of Antarctic feather stars were also recorded. |
