Business News - Zalo continues to be the most popular messaging platform in Vietnam Q3/2024

According to the report “The Connected Consumer Q.III/2024” just published by Decision Lab, Zalo continues to lead messaging platforms in Vietnam in terms of penetration rate and preference rate.

Specifically in the category of “Messaging platforms”, Zalo leads with a penetration rate of 85% , followed by Facebook with 59% and Messenger with 52%. Compared to the second quarter, Zalo’s usage rate increased by 3% while Facebook and Messenger’s usage rates decreased slightly, with decreases of 3% and 1%, respectively.

In terms of preference rate, Zalo's rate has grown steadily over the quarters since the beginning of 2024. In Q3, Zalo is currently leading with 57%, surpassing both Messenger and Facebook platforms (both at 17%).

Zalo leads in penetration rate with 85%


Notably, Zalo maintains its position as the most popular platform among all three user generation groups : Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z. 75% of Gen X respondents prefer to use Zalo for casual messaging, while the rate of using Messenger and Facebook for messaging among Gen X is only 10% and 7%, respectively. This rate among Gen Y is 56%. For the young people of Gen Z, although the gap has narrowed, the rate of people who prefer to use Zalo is still high (40%) compared to the rate of using Messenger (28%) and Facebook (24%).

This is the 16th consecutive quarter that Zalo has been the most favorite app among all three user generations since 2020 - a milestone that marks the first time Zalo has officially surpassed Facebook Messenger to become the most favorite messaging app in Vietnam.

According to the newly announced Consolidated Financial Report for the third quarter of 2024 by VNG , the Zalo messaging platform currently has 77.6 million monthly active users (MAU) and nearly 1.97 billion messages sent every day. This "national" messaging application continuously adds new features to help users entertain, work and promote business such as AI Avatar. At the MMA Smarties 2024 awards ceremony held on October 25, Zalo AI was honored in the category "Enabling Technology Company of the Year".
