Receiving Mr. Jeffrey David Perlman - General Director of Warburg Pincus Investment Fund (USA), and Co-Chairman of the ASEAN-US Business Council on April 18 in Hanoi, General Secretary To Lam affirmed that the US is one of the most important strategic partners of Vietnam.
The General Secretary expressed his delight at the positive and substantive developments of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in recent times, for the benefit of the people of the two countries, for peace, stability and sustainable development in the region and the world.
The General Secretary congratulated and highly appreciated the success of the fund's investment projects in Vietnam, contributing to Vietnam's development as well as expanding economic, investment and trade cooperation between the two countries.
The General Secretary affirmed that the Party and State of Vietnam are very interested in and create favorable conditions for foreign enterprises to invest in Vietnam, including US enterprises, to do business effectively and sustainably in Vietnam in accordance with the provisions of law; suggested that the Fund maintain and increase investment in ongoing projects, while expanding to areas where US enterprises have strengths and Vietnam has demand such as high technology, new energy, and digital infrastructure.
The General Secretary thanked the Fund and US businesses for accompanying and supporting Vietnam in handling tariff issues between the two countries.
At the same time, he affirmed that Vietnam and the US are two economies that complement and supplement each other; he said that the recent visit to the US by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc as the General Secretary's Special Envoy had achieved initial positive results for the two sides to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement.
Regarding the tax recently issued by President Donald Trump, the General Secretary asked Mr. Jeffrey David Perlman and US businesses investing and doing business in Vietnam to continue to support and have a voice so that bilateral negotiations can soon achieve results, contributing to promoting stable and sustainable development of economic, trade and investment cooperation, meeting the interests of the people and businesses of the two countries.
The General Director of Warburg Pincus Investment Fund affirmed that with the good results of more than a decade of doing business in Vietnam, the fund wishes to continue investing long-term, bringing positive changes in Vietnam.
Mr. Jeffrey David Perlman believes that the success of the fund's projects in Vietnam, including the Ho Tram project in Ba Ria-Vung Tau and the Metropole hotel project in Hanoi, will be symbols of success in cooperation between the two countries as well as foreign investment in Vietnam, thereby attracting more potential investors.
The General Director of Warburg Pincus Investment Fund affirmed that he and the fund's leaders will continue to support and advise Vietnamese ministries and sectors on tariff solutions that benefit the people and businesses of the two countries, for the stable, sustainable and effective development of Vietnam-US relations.
On the same day, at the workshop "US Countervailing Taxes and Vietnamese Enterprises' Response", a representative of the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham) said that AmCham's view on the US's change in tax policy was expressed in a letter signed with VCCI to the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and the US Trade Representative, requesting the Trump Administration to temporarily suspend the imposition of countervailing taxes on Vietnamese exports.
In the letter, AmCham and VCCI affirmed that the reciprocal tax not only affects Vietnamese enterprises but also greatly affects American enterprises. Therefore, the two organizations recommend that the Department of Commerce and the US Government reconsider this decision as well as the US trade policy towards Vietnam.
"However, we are also very pleased that recently, the Government has taken many measures and actions to resolve this issue. Up to now, there are two solutions to deal with the US's reciprocal tax, including focusing on negotiations and supporting businesses," said an AmCham representative.
According to AmCham and VCCI, if the new high tariffs are applied, it will negatively affect the operations of member businesses and consumers, as well as the bilateral trade relationship. Reducing tariffs on products imported into Vietnam as well as on goods serving US consumers is the factor that supports US businesses, the economy and consumers. Increasing tariffs will not bring the same effect.
The two organizations hope that the two governments will engage in open dialogue and cooperation to develop a constructive program that will contribute to reducing the US trade deficit with Vietnam, in the direction of raising living standards and promoting shared prosperity for both countries.
