Actress Mary Mina used a parabolic mirror and sunlight to ignite the torch during a rehearsal.
On April 15, during a rehearsal in ancient Olympia (Greece), the Paris 2024 Olympic torch was lit by the rays of the sun. The official ceremony will take place on April 16, marking the final stage towards the Olympics.
As the high priestess, Greek actress Mary Mina used a parabolic mirror and the sun's rays to ignite the torch during a dress rehearsal before the traditional ceremony in ancient Olympia - the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
It is expected that today (April 16), the flame will be lit under the witness of Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and the leader of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In case of unfavorable weather, when the mirror cannot be used to light the torch due to clouds, the flame lit during the rehearsal will be used instead.
After the traditional torch lighting ceremony, actress Mina will pass the flame to the first torchbearer, Olympic rowing champion Stefanos Douskos, marking the start of the 11-day relay in Greece.
The flame will then be handed over to the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee in Athens on April 26 before making a one-night stopover at the French Embassy in the Greek capital and departing for France the following day on the sailboat Belem.
The Olympic flame will arrive in Marseille, southern France, on May 8. About 150,000 people are expected to attend a torch-welcoming ceremony at the city's Old Port (Vieux Port) before the French leg of the relay begins.
This leg will last 68 days and the sacred torch will be lit at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on July 26.
