Since its launch, the Toyota Yaris Cross has consistently been rated as one of Toyota's most stylish and well-designed models. Its sleek, modern, and compact design makes this small crossover a favorite among urban users. However, the new rendering from Kleber Silva (alias KDesign AG on Behance) has opened up a completely different perspective: the Yaris Cross can absolutely become a sporty pickup without feeling out of place in the world of the Hilux or Tacoma.
In the design, Kleber Silva used the entire front end of the Yaris Cross – including the grille, headlights, and front bumper – and "attached" it to the body of a small pickup truck. The result is a fresh, more angular overall look while still retaining the Yaris's signature style. The original wheels are retained, but are fitted with larger off-road tires to suit its pickup truck role. The rear of the vehicle has been completely redesigned with taillights extending to the sides and a minimalist, robust tailgate design. The thick, black plastic trim along the lower body gives the pickup truck a more masculine and muscular look. Notably, the interior remains unchanged – it's still the modern cabin of the Yaris Cross.
Although this is just a concept rendering, the question is whether the Japanese automaker can realize a small pickup truck model based on the Toyota Yaris Cross? In terms of platform, the current chassis of the Yaris Cross is clearly unsuitable for the payload and structure of a pickup truck. If Toyota wants to turn this idea into reality, they will most likely have to use the IMV platform currently used for the Hilux, or develop an electrified version, similar to the direction of the new generation Hilux. Another interesting point is the naming convention. The term "Cross" in Yaris Cross implies it's a crossover version of the Yaris, so adding "pickup" after it would feel odd. "Yaris Truck" sounds more logical, but it lacks the inherent brand identity.
Nevertheless, experimenting with transforming the Toyota Yaris Cross into a compact pickup truck is an interesting test of imagination and the trend towards versatile design in the automotive industry today. Video : Preview of the Toyota Yaris Cross transforming into a compact pickup truck.
