The number of private enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises operating in the film industry here is more than 800. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has more than 100 units and establishments registered to produce and distribute films. In 2023, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung and Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai chaired a working session on the development of culture, sports and tourism in Ho Chi Minh City. Minister Nguyen Van Hung suggested that Ho Chi Minh City quickly develop a Creative City project to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) with the orientation of Ho Chi Minh City becoming a "Cinema City", in addition to Hanoi which became a "Creative Design City" in 2019, Da Lat as a "Creative Music City" and Hoi An as a "City of Crafts and Folk Arts" (all recognized in 2023).
According to UNESCO's definition, a "Film City" is a city recognized in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for its outstanding contribution to the film industry, both creatively and productively.
