There is no official plan to narrow or expand the Nguyen Binh Khiem - Dien Bien Phu roundabout (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City). This is the information that Mr. Vo Khanh Hung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, just told a reporter of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper.
Specifically, the Department of Transport has not yet agreed on the plan to widen or narrow the roundabout. Currently, the Department of Transport is calculating and running traffic simulations to see the level of impact when narrowing or widening this roundabout.

Mr. Vo Khanh Hung, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport
According to Mr. Vo Khanh Hung, the simulation is like that but to apply it in practice, it also needs to be monitored for a period of time to see if it is stable or not. If it is not stable, further adjustments will be made.
"What has existed since ancient times in Ho Chi Minh City is not random, it has also been surveyed and adjusted from practice. Some roundabouts at this time need to be adjusted in this way but then adjusted in another direction...
Like the Nguyen Hue - Le Loi roundabout, if the roundabout is closed, many vehicles from all directions will rush to Le Thanh Ton Street, and this street has the City People's Committee headquarters, so the roundabout will only be temporarily closed in the late afternoon and evening on the two weekends to serve the walking street" - Mr. Hung cited.
As an immediate solution to limit local traffic congestion at the Nguyen Binh Khiem - Dien Bien Phu roundabout during rush hour, Mr. Ngo Hai Duong, Head of the Department of Road Traffic Infrastructure Management (under the Department of Transport), said that the Department will extend the median strip of Dien Bien Phu Street towards the roundabout (still ensuring the width for vehicles to travel through the roundabout) to reduce the situation of deliberately traveling outside the roundabout. At the same time, phase 2 will be implemented when organizing one-way traffic on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street from Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street to Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, contributing to reducing the density of vehicles traveling into the roundabout.

Nguyen Binh Khiem - Dien Bien Phu roundabout
Regarding the plan to remove roundabouts, establish traffic intersections and arrange a green-yellow-red traffic light system, Mr. Duong said it is very difficult and needs to be considered when there is full data and level of impact.
According to the Head of the Department of Road Traffic Infrastructure Management, removing the roundabout will create lines of vehicles waiting for traffic lights on Dien Bien Phu Bridge, Nguyen Binh Khiem Street, Hoang Sa Street (especially on Dien Bien Phu Street, it can be extended to the Dien Bien Phu - Dinh Tien Hoang intersection because the number of vehicles cannot escape within one cycle during rush hour).
