Paying a high price for self-treating kidney stones

Unfortunate complications

Three months ago, Mr. TK (60 years old, from Phu Tho) felt a large mass on his right flank. Worried, Mr. K went to E Hospital, Hanoi for a check-up. There, the examination results showed that one of Mr. K's kidneys had completely lost its function, had water retention, and was the size of a bowl. The doctors advised him to have one of the damaged kidneys removed.

People with kidney stones need to be monitored and intervened when prescribed by a doctor.

Sitting in a daze after receiving the doctor's conclusion, Mr. K sighed and said: "I knew I had kidney stones 5 years ago, but that day the doctor said to just monitor them because the stones were small. I was busy with work so I didn't go back to see a doctor. A friend instructed me to take herbal medicine to push the stones out of the kidney without any intervention, not harmful to health, so I listened. Who would have thought it would turn out like this."

Cases like Mr. K's are not uncommon. Mr. NTKD (48 years old, in Hanoi) also discovered kidney stones a long time ago, but because he did not feel much pain, he subjectively did not seek treatment.

Instead of going to the doctor to monitor the progress of the disease, Mr. D arbitrarily used herbal medicine in the hope that the kidney stones would dissolve on their own. Recently, when he felt his health getting worse and had a dull pain in his right lumbar region, Mr. D went to the doctor. With a diagnosis of grade 4 hydronephrosis of the right kidney, loss of function due to stones at the junction of the renal pelvis and ureter, the doctor prescribed the mandatory treatment method of removing the kidney.

Luckily, a young woman named PA (26 years old, in Hung Yen ) went to the hospital when she suddenly had severe abdominal pain in the left flank, pain spreading to the lower back and down to the genitourinary tract, accompanied by frequent urination, pink urine, nausea...

Ultrasound results showed that the left renal pelvis had grade 2 hydronephrosis. According to PA, 6 months ago, she discovered bilateral kidney stones and right urethral stones. At that time, she took medication as prescribed by the doctor but when the pain subsided, she did not follow up further. To avoid dangerous complications of kidney stones such as loss of kidney function, urinary tract infection, pyelonephritis, PA was ordered to be hospitalized for emergency treatment and further monitoring.

Herbal medicine and tobacco are difficult to remove kidney stones.

According to Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien, Head of the Department of Urology and Andrology, E Hospital, many patients detect urinary stones early but are subjective in returning for check-ups and monitoring, leading to unfortunate consequences.

When there are signs of back pain or pain in the lumbar region, below the ribs, pain when urinating, urinary incontinence, urinary retention... you need to go to a medical facility immediately for examination and timely treatment, avoid being too late, causing unfortunate consequences.

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien

It is worth mentioning that many kidney stone patients tell each other to take herbal medicine with the hope that the kidney stones will pass without surgery. However, for large kidney stones that have been calcified, they are very hard and cannot be dissolved even when acid is poured in. Therefore, herbal medicine and tobacco are very difficult to remove kidney stones.

"In reality, the disease still exists, causing the kidneys to be increasingly affected and lose function. Over time, the patient will show signs of kidney failure or complications of urinary stones before going to the hospital for examination, at which point the disease is too severe, causing many difficulties for the treatment process later on," said Dr. Lien.

According to Dr. Lien, there are many causes of kidney stones such as: Urinary tract abnormalities, metabolic disorders causing hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria; changes in urine pH, hyperparathyroidism.

In which, genetic factors, family factors, some people related to metabolic factors, hot working environment, infection factors, lack of water intake, lack of exercise causing urine retention are factors that increase the risk of disease.

Drinking hard water (water containing high mineral content, mainly calcium and magnesium ions) is also a risk factor for stone formation. In addition, the habit of eating salty foods leading to concentrated urine also increases the risk of stone formation.

What to do to prevent urinary stones?

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Dung, former Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging - Vietnam - Soviet Friendship Hospital, urinary stones are a very common disease but should not be taken lightly because if the stones are in a blocked position, they will cause many symptoms and dangerous complications. Not drinking enough water, an unreasonable lifestyle (eating salty foods, eating a lot of protein), using drugs incorrectly... can lead to the risk of kidney stones.

To prevent kidney stones, people need to pay attention to thoroughly treating urinary tract infections; drink plenty of water, minimize holding urine; be active and build a diet low in sodium and high in potassium, limit animal protein...

Dr. Dung added that people at risk of urinary stones should have regular check-ups at least every 2-3 months with simple tests such as: abdominal ultrasound, urinary system X-ray, urine, blood count, blood biochemistry... to detect the disease promptly.

When urinary stones require surgery, early intervention is needed to avoid unfortunate complications. Currently, there are many minimally invasive urinary stone intervention methods such as: Flexible endoscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, endoscopic lithotripsy, endoscopic stone removal, extracorporeal lithotripsy with minimal damage, maximum efficiency, bringing many benefits and choices to patients.
