(CLO) At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia questioned why Russia's allies such as North Korea could not help Moscow in the war in Ukraine, while Western countries said they had the right to support Kiev.
Mr Nebenzia has faced protests from the US, Britain, South Korea, Ukraine and other countries, which say the North Korean troops allegedly coming to aid Russia violate the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions.

"Any activity involving North Korea sending troops to Russia violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions," South Korea's UN Ambassador Joonkook Hwang said.
According to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, about 10,000 North Korean soldiers are present in eastern Russia, and it is highly likely that they will participate in supporting military operations in the Kursk region, near the border with Ukraine.
However, Mr. Nebenzia asserted that military cooperation between Russia and North Korea does not violate international law. Mr. Nebenzia argued: “Even if what our Western colleagues say about cooperation between Russia and North Korea is true, why should the United States and its allies impose the false logic that they have the right to help Ukraine, while Russia’s allies are not allowed to do the same?”
In response, Ukraine's UN Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya said: "No country is providing assistance to Ukraine, which is currently under Security Council sanctions." He also stressed: "Accepting assistance from North Korea... is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter. North Korea's sending of troops to support Russia's war in Ukraine is a serious violation of international law."
North Korea has been subject to Security Council sanctions since 2006, and the measures have been gradually strengthened over the years to prevent North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
While North Korea has not officially acknowledged the deployment of troops to Russia, it has said any such move would comply with international law.
“If Russia’s sovereignty and security interests are threatened by dangerous attempts by the United States and the West, and if we find it necessary to respond, we will make the necessary decision,” North Korean Ambassador to the United Nations Song Kim said.
However, US Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood warned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un: “If North Korean soldiers go into Ukraine to support Russia, they will come back in body bags. I advise Mr. Kim to think carefully before engaging in this reckless and dangerous action.”
