Children need skills to defend themselves against strangers.

(PLVN) - In recent years, there have been many cases of strangers kidnapping children. This shows that parents and schools not only need to pay attention to safety but also teach children self-defense as a skill, which is a way for children to proactively keep themselves safe, as well as shape and build good qualities.

Kidnappers are increasingly daring and reckless.

Most recently, a student in Hai Phong was kidnapped, causing panic in the community. Specifically, at a kindergarten in Hai Phong, in the afternoon after school, a student was kidnapped by a stranger. The teacher in charge of the class said that when the subject came to pick up the child, the child did not show any unusual behavior towards strangers and also seemed very happy when someone came to pick him up. It was not until the student's family arrived that they discovered that the child had been taken away by a stranger. Later, thanks to the intervention of the authorities, the family was able to find the student. The kidnapper claimed that he did not know the student's family.

Recently, on some fanpages, an account named N shared footage from a camera in the house. Specifically, when the adults in the family had just left the house, leaving only two children, 4 years old and 15 years old, a stranger (wearing a mask and a baseball cap) who had been outside before, calmly entered the house. Luckily, when Ms. N's younger brother had just returned home, the stranger said he had found the wrong address, then quickly left.

In another case, at the end of 2023, the People's Court of Long An province held a first-instance trial of a kidnapping case for the purpose of appropriating property, sentencing defendant NTS, residing in Thu Thua district, Long An province, to 15 years in prison. S is the subject who committed the act of kidnapping a child, the child of a close friend. On the day of the incident, S went to pick up his daughter (in 3rd grade) at school and asked to pick up his close friend's child as well. Knowing that the two families were close, the teacher agreed. Due to debt, S kidnapped the child and then demanded a ransom of 2 billion VND. The child was later successfully rescued.

Although parents today are more vigilant, child kidnappers are becoming more reckless and daring. They are willing to go into schools and homes and use many sophisticated tricks to deceive teachers and adults in the family, with many different purposes such as demanding ransom, buying and selling children, etc.

Children need to be taught self-defense skills.

Sharing with the media, social psychologist, Professor, Dr. Vu Gia Hien, stated that the continuous kidnapping of children for ransom is partly due to “contagious psychology and behavior”. That is, imitating each other, one subject successfully or unsuccessfully kidnaps, but it causes a phenomenon, at that time other subjects in resentment, financial difficulties and psychological instability immediately think of kidnapping for ransom.

Most of the time, kidnappers choose children who are easy to lure and lie to get them to follow them. Their main trick is to take advantage of children's innocence and love of receiving gifts. The kidnappers can be strangers, relatives, or acquaintances; they can approach children while they are playing at supermarkets, playgrounds, houses, parks, schools, etc.

However, children who are aware of self-protection will be a barrier to prevent wrongdoing. In fact, the more children know how to protect themselves from harm, the better.

Master Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien, specializing in primary education, said: Teaching children self-defense skills is an important content that many families, kindergartens, and primary schools focus on equipping children with early. Children are the target of many kidnappers because of their weak self-defense skills.

If you want children to remember, absorb and apply in life, you need to be flexible in the way you teach. For example, parents and teachers need many situations to help children establish skills to cope with disadvantages, know how to handle when being lured by strangers, recognize and stay away from dangers. Such as the skill of distinguishing strangers from relatives, remembering phone numbers of parents, police, escape skills such as shouting for help, quick reaction skills when being approached by strangers... These are some of the many basic self-defense skills that children need to be equipped with right from preschool and primary school age.
