Authorities dismantled a ring that used self-inflicted injuries to defraud people of 6 billion VND in life insurance money.

The Criminal Police Department of Phu Tho Provincial Police has just dismantled an organized self-inflicted injury ring that defrauded more than 6 billion VND from numerous life insurance companies such as Manulife, AIA, Dai-ichi Life, FWD, Sun Life, Chubb Life… Of which, Manulife alone was defrauded of 2.6 billion VND.

Ta Minh Chau was the ringleader of the operation.

Through the investigation process, the Police Investigation Agency clarified that Ta Minh Chau, born in 1995, a former employee of the Cam Khe District Medical Center (formerly), Phu Tho province, was the mastermind and ringleader.

Taking advantage of her long career in the medical field and her deep understanding of bone and joint structure, as well as the insurance payout mechanism for high-value fractures, Chau established a systematic fraud scheme, from soliciting insurance purchases and orchestrating injuries to falsifying medical records to embezzle money from insurance companies.

Notably, Chau directly administered anesthetic injections and then used needles and hammers to manipulate the bones of insurance policyholders, creating fractures similar to those caused by real accidents. Once the injuries were created, Chau instructed the victims to stage fake accident scenes such as electric shocks or falls into streams to legitimize the medical records and complete the claim process.

The X-ray images show several bone injuries that the suspect fabricated to fraudulently claim life insurance money.

The investigating agency determined that Chau colluded with Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu and other individuals including Nguyen Anh Dung, Ha Thanh Dat, Hoang Van Truong, Hoang Van Thang, Hoang Thi Hong Diep, Hoang Thi Linh… These were all people who directly participated in purchasing insurance under Chau's guidance and were injured by Chau in order to gain illicit profits.

Based on the investigation results, the Phu Tho Provincial Police Investigation Agency issued an emergency detention order against Ta Minh Chau, Hoang Van Truong, Hoang Van Thang, Hoang Thi Hong Diep, and Nguyen Anh Dung; and temporarily detained 6 related individuals to assist with the investigation.

Currently, the Phu Tho Provincial Police Investigation Agency is continuing to expand the investigation and clarify the role of each suspect.
