North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on November 5.
The Japanese government also announced that North Korea had fired a ballistic missile. The Japanese Coast Guard said the object believed to be a ballistic missile fired by North Korea fell, and NHK reported that it appeared to have landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone in the sea.
North Korea's latest missile launch comes after Pyongyang tested a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile last week. North Korean media called the Hwasong-19 weapon " the world's most powerful strategic rocket."
Additionally, North Korea tested a missile just hours before the US presidential election.
In a related development, KCNA news agency reported on November 5 that Kim Yo-jong, Vice Director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and sister of leader Kim Jong-un, criticized the joint military exercise between the US, South Korea and Japan.
She said the move showed that North Korea's efforts to strengthen its nuclear capabilities were the right thing to do.
The three-nation exercise comes after North Korea tested its Hwasong-19 missile. According to North Korea, the US and its allies have held more than 20 drills in 2024.
North Korea sees this as a threat to its security and Ms Kim asserted that Pyongyang will not be swayed from its path of increasing its nuclear deterrent.
