The medical team performed surgery overnight to save the foot of the female student in the accident.

Late on October 15, on Trinh Van Bo Street (Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi), nearFPT Polytechnic College, after a strong collision between a large-displacement motorcycle and a motorbike, female student D.P. (19 years old, from Bac Ninh) - the motorbike driver was severed in a complicated position - 1/3 of the lower right leg, with crushed soft tissue.

Immediately after the accident, the victim received first aid and was urgently transferred to the 108 Military Central Hospital during the "golden time" - about 2 hours after the injury.

In the dead of night, the medical team quickly performed debridement, treated the injury, and reconnected blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and bones. After more than 6 hours of intense surgery, the severed limb was successfully reattached. Nearly 2 weeks after surgery, the patient was healthy and could move his toes, showing positive recovery results.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Dien Thanh Hiep, Department of Upper Limb Surgery and Microsurgery, said that this was a difficult case because the patient was young, the damaged limb was complicated, and the preservation and transportation time was long. However, thanks to proper first aid and preservation of the limb, along with the smooth coordination between the surgical teams, the limb replantation was a great success.

Dr. Nguyen Viet Nam, Director of the Institute of Orthopedics and Trauma, recommends that in cases of accidents that cause limbs to be severed, first aid and proper preservation play a decisive role in the ability to successfully reattach the limb. The severed limb needs to be washed with cooled boiled water or saline, wrapped in a clean towel/gauze, put in a sealed plastic bag and placed in a thermos of ice.

Be careful not to let the limb come into direct contact with ice and do not use soap or chemicals to wash it. The golden time to reattach the limb is within 6 hours if properly preserved. Early transfer to a facility with microsurgery capabilities will significantly improve the chances of limb recovery.
