Fortunately, the family discovered it in time and quickly took the boy to the Xuyen A General Hospital in Vinh Long for emergency treatment. At the hospital, the boy was examined and had an X-ray taken. The image showed a foreign object in the stomach, a magnet with an edge about 20 mm long.

Immediately, the child was transferred to the Endoscopy Department. The medical team performed endoscopy under anesthesia, using specialized tools to remove the foreign object. After a short time, the magnet was safely removed. Examination of the digestive tract showed no signs of injury, the child was conscious and was discharged the same day.

On September 29, specialist doctor Nguyen Trong Tuong, Deputy Head of Endoscopy Department, Xuyen A General Hospital, Vinh Long shared that the child was discovered and brought to the hospital early, so the intervention was favorable. The foreign object was not sharp, so fortunately it did not cause perforation or bleeding. However, if left for a long time, the foreign object can move down to the intestine, causing obstruction, even severe damage to the digestive tract.

Consecutive cases of foreign object swallowing in children

Previously, while playing, a 5-year-old boy (in Vinh Long) accidentally swallowed a coin. His family discovered it and quickly took him to a local hospital, but the hospital did not have the facilities to perform endoscopy to remove the foreign object. After that, the boy was transferred to another hospital but could not intervene. Fortunately, the family promptly took him to Xuyen A Vinh Long Hospital for emergency intervention, successfully removing the coin stuck in the esophagus.

Here, the doctors quickly examined and ordered an X-ray. The image showed a flat, round foreign object at the esophagus - exactly as the family had said, it was the coin the child had swallowed.

Immediately afterwards, the child was transferred to the Endoscopy Department to perform the procedure. The medical team performed an endoscopy under anesthesia, using specialized tools to access and remove the foreign object. After a short period of time, the 20 mm coin was safely removed. Examination of the gastric mucosa - esophagus showed no damage or bleeding. The child was alert, in stable health and was discharged that same night.

Through the above cases, doctors recommend that parents with small children should not let their children play with small toys. Do not let children come into contact with dangerous toys such as coins, toothpicks, button batteries, chemicals, etc. When discovering or suspecting that a child has swallowed a foreign object, quickly take the child to a medical facility so that the doctor can intervene with endoscopy and remove the foreign object.
