On the morning of October 10th, at the National Convention Center (1 Thang Long Avenue, Nam Tu Liem District), the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam , the National Assembly, the President, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and the city of Hanoi solemnly organized the national-level commemoration ceremony for the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024).

Exactly 70 years ago, after 9 years of protracted and arduous resistance, the tenacious and courageous fighting spirit of our army and people, especially with the victory of the Dien Bien Phu campaign in 1954, forced the French colonialists to sign the Geneva Accords on July 21, 1954, on the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam, recognizing the independence, sovereignty , and territorial integrity of the three countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia; and agreeing to withdraw their troops from the North of our country.

On the morning of October 10, 1954, the City Military and Political Committee and various army units, divided into several large contingents, launched a historic march into Hanoi . Over 400,000 people of the capital city, amidst a sea of flags and flowers, excitedly welcomed the victorious army returning home with overwhelming joy.

At 3 PM that same day, the people and soldiers of Hanoi, on behalf of the entire nation, held a flag-raising ceremony and listened to a letter from President Ho Chi Minh: “For the past eight years, the Government had to leave the capital to wage the resistance war to save the country. Although separated, the Government's heart was always close to the people. Today, thanks to the unity and solidarity of our army and people, and the heroic fighting of our army, the resistance war has been victorious. The Government has returned to the capital to be with the people. Though separated by thousands of miles, we are one family; our joy is immeasurable…”

The takeover of the capital was a resounding success. We safely and swiftly took over 129 public offices, factories, hospitals, and schools, including military positions and important headquarters such as the Thuy Fortress, Bach Mai Airport, Gia Lam Airport, the Governor-General's Palace, the North Vietnamese Chief Minister's Palace, and the Federal Secret Police headquarters... People's lives remained normal and stable. Electricity, water, and transportation services operated smoothly and efficiently, and political security and social order were ensured.

Over the past 70 years, Hanoi has achieved significant development, consistently maintaining strong growth and making positive contributions to national growth. However, as the capital, the political and administrative center of the nation, and a major center for culture, science, education, and the economy, Hanoi still harbors the aspiration to become a "dragon," embodying the image of a smart, modern, and truly worthy city.
