China unveils homegrown supercomputer

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên15/12/2023

According to Extreme Tech , the new supercomputer is called Tianhe Xingyi, although specific figures or information about it are quite vague. The source only stated that the supercomputer was developed with “domestic advanced computing architecture, high-performance multi-core processors, high-speed network connections, and large-scale storage.”

The announcement said that compared to Tianhe-2, the new supercomputer has doubled its performance in many aspects. That's not surprising, since Tianhe-2 first appeared on the Top500 list in 2013 and was the world's fastest supercomputer for several years after that. It was only dethroned by TaihuLight, another Chinese computer, in 2016.

What's notable here is that Tianhe-2 uses 32,000 Intel Xeon 12 CPUs, while the new system uses processors made in China. According to Tom's Hardware, the new supercomputer could be the third version of Tianhe, with a performance of 1.7 exaflops. The new computer is said to be equipped with MT3000 processors, but there are no details yet on how many CPUs are used or how many cores they provide. The CPUs used are multi-core Armv8 Phytium 2000+ and use the Matrix 2000+ (MTP) processor architecture.

It remains to be seen how powerful the Tianhe Xingyi supercomputer will be. China no longer lists its system on the Top500 list like other countries in the world, but it has still submitted its supercomputer to the Gordon Bell Prize organizers.
