To facilitate trade, the two sides agreed to enhance customs clearance capacity by increasing working hours and manpower at border gates, reducing congestion, especially during peak seasons.
Durian continues to be a product that receives special priority. GACC has updated and allowed an additional 829 growing area codes and 131 packing facilities in Vietnam to export durian to the Chinese market.
This is an important technical step forward and a great source of encouragement for both farmers and businesses.
Vietnam has also proposed three key directions for cooperation: adjusting food safety control policies in a more favorable direction, speeding up customs clearance, and promptly approving qualified laboratories to test indicators such as Cadmium and Yellow O dye. Vietnam has also proactively handled food safety issues that have been flagged and sent detailed reports to GACC.
Vietnam-China agricultural trade relations are increasingly close with 28 protocols and memorandums of understanding signed, creating a solid legal corridor for many products such as fresh fruits, seafood, milk and processed animal feed products.
China is currently Vietnam’s largest agricultural export market. Millions of tons of fruits such as watermelon, durian, dragon fruit, mango, and longan are exported through northern border gates every year.
Regarding other potential products, GACC said it will soon send a delegation to Vietnam to inspect grapefruit and lemon growing areas and durian and chili packaging facilities. This is a necessary step towards drafting a new export protocol.
Regarding seafood, the two sides are completing procedures to sign a new protocol for exploited and live seafood, integrating food safety control requirements according to new standards.
To promptly handle problems, China proposed establishing a joint working group between the two sides, strengthening cooperation in testing, quarantine, and traceability, especially for high-risk products.
Bilateral agricultural, forestry and fishery import-export turnover in 2024 will reach 17.8 billion USD, an increase of 14.6% compared to 2023, of which exports will reach 13.5 billion USD.
In the first four months of this year alone, exports to China reached 5.07 billion USD. These are positive signals showing the great potential of this market for Vietnamese agricultural products.
