Yuran Fernandes scored to help PSM beat CAHN Club in the first leg of the semi-finals. |
The incident began after the loss to PSM Makassar on May 3. That was the match that PSM Makassar had to play despite having previously requested the tournament organizers to change the schedule to have more time to prepare for the match against CAHN Club in the semifinals of the Southeast Asian Cup 1.
The frustrations were probably accumulated by Yuran Fernandes before the match. During the match, he and many PSM Makassar players believed that referee Nendi Rohaendi made many unfair decisions. That was the reason why the 30-year-old midfielder "vented" his anger on social media.
“Football in Indonesia is a joke. If you want to make money, you can come to Indonesia. If you want to play football seriously, leave here,” he wrote.
Although the message was later deleted, it caused outrage among Indonesian fans. Yuran Fernandes explained that his real meaning in his statement was to refer to the quality of the Indonesian National Championship and not to criticize the people there. He also apologized for his statement.
"Indonesian football fans. I want to explain what I wrote. My statement is purely focused on football," said Yuran Fernandes, who headed the ball into the net against CAHN.
However, the PSSI Disciplinary Board still decided to ban the Curacao player for 12 months. This punishment may force Yuran Fernandes to leave Indonesia and look for a new destination because it is unlikely that he will accept sitting idle for a year.
Parent club PSM Makassar are trying to defend their player. They have announced that they will appeal the sanction and fully support Yuran Fernandes in this process.
"PSM regrets the sanction imposed on Yuran Fernandes. PSM Makassar will appeal and together with Yuran Fernandes will face this situation."
