When Leo Gerdén left his native Sweden to study at Harvard, he was looking forward to the day he would walk across the stage to receive his diploma. But now that the day has finally arrived, Gerdén’s joy is not complete. “To be honest, my emotions are mixed,” Gerdén told the American media.
Still, Gerdén is luckier than many other international students at Harvard, as he has completed his studies there. Meanwhile, many other international students are fearful for their uncertain future.
Harvard has planned to shorten this year's commencement ceremony, with the school's website providing a simple announcement of the event.

However, graduation ceremonies are always an opportunity for students and invited speakers to make personal speeches, which is difficult for schools to completely control.
The commencement ceremony took place just as federal judge Allison Burroughs conducted her first hearing in a courtroom just six miles from the commencement ceremony.
During this hearing, Ms. Burroughs will hear representatives from Harvard and the US Government present arguments in the decisive lawsuit between the two sides.
The big question now is: Will international students be able to return to Harvard next fall? Harvard has sued the administration to overturn the ban on international student admissions and restore federal funding.
For many Harvard students, the joy of graduation is now overshadowed by what is happening at the most prestigious university in the United States.
The biggest change to this year’s commencement program is the cancellation of separate ceremonies for underrepresented groups, which have benefited from the university’s policies promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Still, in response to new federal requirements that prohibit schools from using general funds to host “racially discriminatory” ceremonies, Harvard has been quick to adjust.
The big question hanging over Harvard’s commencement ceremony is whether any students or speakers will make controversial statements at a time when Harvard is trying to avoid further “punishment” from the US government.
At this year’s commencement ceremony, Harvard chose American physician and writer Abraham Verghese as the keynote speaker. Mr. Verghese always delivers humane messages and demonstrates a gentle attitude whenever he is invited to speak at events.
