Located in the northernmost part of Japan, Sapporo has cool summers and long winters, so schools do not have air conditioning. However, when the city enters a period of extreme heat, air conditioning becomes indispensable.
Currently, the installation rate is only about 10% of the total number of schools. In this context, more than 50% of facilities have to close and let students go home early, thereby greatly affecting the ability to receive knowledge.
Many students complained that the classrooms were too hot and stuffy, making it difficult for them to concentrate on what their teachers were saying. Teachers were also worried that the heat would affect their students’ health. Outdoor lessons and physical education had been suspended, but sitting in the classroom was not comfortable enough.
To cope with the extreme weather conditions, in addition to speeding up the installation of air conditioners, schools have also developed many coping plans. Typically, they reduce school hours and adjust class start times earlier.
In addition to Sapporo, other areas in Japan such as Tokyo have also recorded severe heat. Authorities have advised schools not to organize outdoor classes or strenuous activities. Schools may close if the weather exceeds the permissible level.
