Bumpy road to class
As one of the schools located in a remote commune of Lang Son province, Yen Lo Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Thien Hoa commune is overcoming difficulties every day to ensure the quality of education for students in the highlands.
In the 2025-2026 school year, Yen Lo Primary Boarding School has a total of 140 students, divided into 10 classes. The school has 1 main campus and 1 Khuoi Chang campus, this is a campus with 100% of the students being Nung ethnic people with many difficulties.
Although it has received investment attention from all levels and sectors in recent times, the school's facilities still do not meet the teaching requirements according to the 2018 General Education Program.
“Currently, the school still lacks many functional rooms such as libraries, practice rooms, and equipment rooms. The quality of existing classrooms is deteriorating due to the long-standing construction and wear and tear over time. The school grounds also do not meet the prescribed standards, the playground and practice area are very narrow, affecting physical education activities and students' experiences,” said Mr. Lam Van Van, Vice Principal of the school.
Besides, the boarding facilities have not met the needs such as: dining room, housing, toilets, common living areas are all cramped, not regularly renovated or upgraded.

Expectations from difficult areas
Despite the shortage, the school's teaching staff is still working day and night in the classroom, dedicated to the students. The students here are mostly ethnic minorities, many of whom have limited Vietnamese language skills and slow learning ability. Therefore, teachers must not only teach but also be patient, flexible, and innovate their teaching methods to suit each student's ability.
In particular, comprehensive education is always focused on by the school, the school often organizes extracurricular activities, experiences, and life skills training suitable to local circumstances. However, the organization still faces many limitations due to the lack of facilities and minimum teaching equipment, especially in the subjects of Information Technology, Foreign Languages, experience activities and skills education.
Faced with these difficulties, Yen Lo Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities is in dire need of investment attention from management levels and the support of the social community. The school hopes to be allocated funds to repair and upgrade degraded classrooms and functional rooms, and to build more toilets and playgrounds for boarding students.
In addition, equipping with minimum teaching equipment, especially information technology equipment such as computers, projectors, interactive screens, and Internet connections is urgent to serve the innovation of teaching methods, online teaching, and access to modern education.

Mr. Van expressed: "We hope that leaders at all levels will have policies to prioritize investment in schools in especially difficult areas. We need to increase programs and projects to support modernized teaching equipment, especially for the subjects of Information Technology, Foreign Languages, and experiential activities, so that students in mountainous areas are not left behind."
In addition to state resources, the support of organizations, businesses and kind individuals will also be of great significance to the school. Gifts such as books, warm clothes, school bags, and school supplies, though small, contribute to motivating students from difficult circumstances to go to school.
Mr. Hoang Van Kiem, a teacher at Khuoi Chang school, said: The hope of the teachers working at the school is to continue to receive attention and investment in facilities so that students in mountainous areas can study more effectively. In particular, teachers and students also wish to invest in and build a bridge across the river so that students from the two villages can go to school more conveniently.
With the cooperation from many sides, hopefully in the coming time, Yen Lo Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities will gradually overcome difficulties, creating more favorable conditions to improve the quality of education. Not only is it improving the facilities, it is also an investment for the future of the generation of ethnic minority students who are striving to improve every day.
